Whooping cough case detected in Haryana town

Sirsa, Jul 8 (PTI) A six-year-old boy here has been diagnosed with a deadly bacterial infection known to cause whooping cough or 'pertussis'. Sameer, a resident of Singikaat mohalla of the town, was diagnosed with the disease after being admitted to a private hospital for throat trouble and fever. The highly contagious disease is understood to have been eradicated from the country, sources said today.While the patient has been referred to Delhi for treatment, local authorities have initiated an immunisation campaign in the area where the case surfaced. 10 teams of the heath department have been pressed into service for medical examination of all children below the age of 15 years, Deputy Civil Surgeon Veeresh Bhushan said, adding that children under the age of five years are being administered vaccines.
