GENEVA (Reuters) - There is still no evidence of community-level spread of the new flu H1N1 virus, Keiji Fukuda, WHO acting assistant director-general, told reporters on Monday.

"We continue to see a number of infections related to travel in a number of different countries ... and a little bit of movement of the virus going south.

"We do not have any evidence that the virus has taken hold and has led to community-level transmissions in any other country right now (outside North America).

"It is not that surveillance has to be strong just in the southern hemisphere. It has to be strong everywhere. Right now we really just don't know how this will go," Fukuda said.

There have been 1,025 laboratory cases, including 26 deaths, and the cases have been seen in 20 countries, he said.

they should have seen that spread now, or not ?
So it's unusual. So it's no typical pandemic. If any.

84 cases outside America. With no community level spread yet.
And Mexico claims they are over the peak.

If many agencies are choosing only to test those with severe symptoms or recent travel to "high risk" areas, they probably don't have an accurate view of what may be happening on a community level.
Just my opinion.

...but CDC is saying its in 30 states by now - how can that happen if there is no community level spread? - which I'm understanding to mean casual contact that leads to h2h transmission

I just get the feeling that there's a whole different level of data that's being circulated around the WHO than the CDC, with the result that there's not blatant contradictions, but inconsistencies.

They are referring to community level spread outside North America.

It shouldn't be long before it is recognized in Europe, probably either in Spain or the UK if the numbers continue to go the way they are going.
