Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus – China

On 11 January 2016, the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) of China notified WHO of 10 additional laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A (H7N9) virus, including 3 deaths.
The cases were reported in the provinces of Zhejiang (6), Jiangsu (2), Guangdong (1) and Jiangxi (1). The median age of the patients is 52.5 years old (ranging from 29 to 77 years old). The cases are split equally between men and women. One of the patients is a health care worker. All cases reported a history of exposure to live poultry.

I think case #1 is included in the December numbers (despite the November onset date) from China NFPC because:

1) . Zhejiang province announced 1 case for November link:



2) The China NHPC announced 2 total countrywide cases for November 2015 link and they were identified in a WHO report as:

#690 - Male, 74, onset November 19, farmer, hospitalized in serious condition, Meizhou City, Guangdong province WHO rpt 17/12/15

#691 - Male, 60, onset November 20, farmer, hospitalized in serious condition, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province note WHO rpt 17/12/15


3) China NFPC announced 10 cases for December link which matches the total number of cases listed in the WHO excel.

#698 - Patient(2), announced by Jiangsu HFPC for Dec 2015, Jiangsu province


The remaining 6 cases in the above excel are noted as:

#700-705 - This line adds 6 cases and 2 deaths. China NFPC announced 10 cases, including 3 deaths, for December 2015. 5 cases & 1 death are previously listed above (#692,#693,#697,#698) 2 Death

I hope this is a sign that the World Health Organization (WHO) will continue to provide individual case details going into the future. Too often in the past, when the WHO posted aggregate case details for disease outbreaks, the details of individual cases were never made publicly available.
