Highlights of the week

Wild Poliovirus

No new WPV1 isolates reported this week. The total WPV1 cases count for 2025 to date is 7 (1 from Afghanistan and 6 from Pakistan) and in 2024, the total case count remains 99 (25 from Afghanistan and 74 from Pakistan).
Twelve new WPV1 positive ES reported this week all from Pakistan. The newly reported WPV1 ES are as follows: 5 from Punjab Province (Bahawalpur, Lahore, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Kasur districts), 4 from Balochistan province (Quetta, Sibi, Lasbela, and Der Bugti districts) and 3 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (Wazir-South Lower, Charsada, and Swabi districts). The total ES count to date in 2025 is 151 (9 from Afghanistan and 142 from Pakistan) compared to 741 in 2024 (113 from Afghanistan and 628 from Pakistan).

Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)

Four new cVDPV2 cases in 2024 reported this week all from Somalia. The newly reported cVDPV2 cases are all from Bossaso district of Bari province with dates of onset between 19-31 December 2024. The cVDPV2 cases count in 2025 to date is 1 (from Djibouti) compared to 45 in 2024 (37 from Yemen, 7 from Somalia, and 1 from Occupied Palestinian Territory).
Nine new cVDPV2 ES reported this week: 5 from Yemen in 2024, 3 from Djibouti and 1 from Somalia in 2025. The newly reported cVDPV2 ES from Yemen in 2024 are: 4 from Aden province (all from Al Mansourah district) and 1 from Hadramoat Al Mukalla province (Al Mukalla district), with collection dates between 21st August and 15th December 2024. While the reported cVDPV2 ES in 2025 from Djibouti are: 2 from Arta province/district and 1 from Djibouti province/district, with samples collection dates between 5th and 19th January 2025. While the one reported from Somalia is from Galkayu South district of South Mudug province with sample collection date on 5th January 2025. The count of cVDPV2 from ES in 2025 is 10 (6 from Occupied Palestinian Territory, 3 from Djibouti, and 1 from Somalia) as compared to 47 in 2024 (20 from Occupied Palestinian Territory, 12 from Yemen, 7 from Djibouti, 3 from Somalia, 2 each from Egypt and Sudan, and 1 in Bahrain).
Advance notification: One new VDPV2 case in 2024 reported this week from White Nile province in Sudan. Details to be shared in next bulletin.
