WHO changes flu virus strain name from swine flu

GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO), bowing to pressure from meat industry producers and concerned governments, said on Thursday it would refer to a deadly new virus strain as influenza A (H1N1) not swine flu.

"From today, WHO will refer to the new influenza virus as 'influenza A (H1N1)'," it said in a brief announcement posted on its www.who.int/en/ website .

That's fine, but based on a scientific analysis of this virus, all eight gene segments are substantially best matched with viruses from swine. Further, these gene signitures go back some ten to twenty years.

It will always be swine flu to me..

I saw someone on another forum from Israel who said she can't even call it swine flu. This might be a religious change as much as an industry change.

I just emailed the HAP-FLU suggestion to the WHO, so let?s see if they pick it up?
