A team of experts from the Regional Office conducted a mission to Azerbaijan on 22?26 October 2012 to assess progress in the country's influenza surveillance system.
Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are among the most frequently reported diseases in Azerbaijan. Universal surveillance for ARI has existed for decades in Azerbaijan. In 2006, the Ministry of Health established surveillance for avian influenza H5N1following the outbreaks of avian influenza H5N1 whereby eight human cases and five deaths occurred in Azerbaijan.
Sentinel surveillance for influenza-like illness in outpatient polyclinics has been implemented since 2009 in order to strengthen epidemiological and virological monitoring of influenza. At the same time, sentinel surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections was set up in hospitals in the capital Baku to increase capacity for monitoring hospitalized influenza including the identification of persons at risk of developing severe disease and the viruses associated with severe illness.
The sentinel sites are based in seven regions of Azerbaijan (Baku, Ganja, Sumgayit, Mingechevir, Qazakh, Khachmaz and Lenkaran) and cover a catchment area of approximately 600 000 persons corresponding to about 7% of the country's population.
