While nurse is quarantined, her dog is under surveillance

.....Officials have saved Pham's Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Bentley, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said Monday. Bentley has been moved to an undisclosed location and is under the care of Dallas Animal Services.

Men in full protective suits helped remove Bentley on Monday from Pham's apartment. Texas A&M veterinary experts are monitoring the dog.

"There is great concern about how to protect this dog; how to treat this dog humanely while protecting the public," said Dr. Eleanor Green, Texas A&M's dean of veterinary medicine.

Hopefully they are "studying" the dog to learn something.

Re: While nurse is quarantined, her dog is under surveillance

I read more than a few mentions of the shallow burials in Africa being dug up by dogs, and this obviously causing much concern. But from a disease-spread point of view, are they worried about dogs being infected from eating dead people, or from infection being spread by the dead people shedding virus as they are exposed to the elements?

Why are people in the US and Spain so freaked out about the poor dogs?

Probably because there is so much the don't know!

Abstract

During the 2001-2002 outbreak in Gabon, we observed that several dogs were highly exposed to Ebola virus by eating infected dead animals. To examine whether these animals became infected with Ebola virus, we sampled 439 dogs and screened them by Ebola virus-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) G assay, antigen detection, and viral polymerase chain reaction amplification. Seven (8.9%) of 79 samples from the 2 main towns, 15 (15.2%) of 99 samples from Mekambo, and 40 (25.2%) of 159 samples from villages in the Ebola virus-epidemic area had detectable Ebola virus-IgG, compared to only 2 (2%) of 102 samples from France. Among dogs from villages with both infected animal carcasses and human cases, seroprevalence was 31.8%. A significant positive direct association existed between seroprevalence and the distances to the Ebola virus-epidemic area. This study suggests that dogs can be infected by Ebola virus and that the putative infection is asymptomatic.

I don't understand why they tested 102 dogs from France (with a 2% infection rate, except to show that somehow ebola exists out of africa.

But have dogs infected humans? And if so, how?
Are the virus levels in dogs similar to that in contagious humans or asymptomatic humans?

I doubt that research has occured. I can't find any.

That's why I say that I hope they use her dog for research, e.g, put a cage with some mice in the dog's cage (as much as I hate to see her dog in a cage!). Or better yet, a ferret. At least it would entertain the lonely dog.

The team testing for viral levels might do that research, since it sounds like they're looking for a new animal vector.

as posted elsewhere, a rabies vaccine appears to protect against ebola in animals - maybe there's an area or significant similarity to ebola.

There has been extensive research done on the status of dogs during outbreaks and never has live virus been found in a dog. They have been PCR negative. What they found were antibodies, just like you might have in your system from killed virus vaccines that never got you infected, but produced an immune response, (antigenic stimulation).

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3298261/
No circulating Ebola antigens or viral DNA sequences (tested for by PCR) were detected in either positive or negative serum specimens, and attempts to isolate virus from these samples failed. These findings indicate either old, transient Ebola infection of the tested dogs, or antigenic stimulation.

Symptoms did not develop in any of these highly exposed animals during the outbreak, a finding that tends to support antigenic stimulation, asymptomatic, or very mild Ebola virus infection.

If there were even a mild infection, where were the viral DNA sequences? I think saying this study even suggests infection suggests fear-mongering for funding, but that is just my opinion.

There has never been an epidemiological link suggesting transmission between dogs and humans, either. And genomic surveillance of the current outbreak supports this.

Genomic surveillance elucidates Ebola virus origin and transmission during the 2014 outbreak
This West African variant likely diverged from central African lineages around 2004, crossed from Guinea to Sierra Leone in May 2014, and has exhibited sustained human-to-human transmission subsequently, with no evidence of additional zoonotic sources.

I think it would be unethical to experiment on this dog in any way, but collecting stool, urine, blood and saliva samples from that sweet-looking little Cavalier to prove it is healthy would be a good idea considering the manufactured panic about this issue. Also make Bentley some "Red, White and Blueberry Independence Treats" if appropriate for him. My dog loving friends say the treats are delicious. ;)

I'd hope they'd do that, whether it is to prove him healthy or learn a little about how an asymptomatic infection is evidenced in "bodily fluids" of a dog.

Ebola patient?s dog doing well, listening to classical music

While Bentley is in confinement, Dallas Animal Services is posting Facebook updates on how he?s doing. After 21 days, he?ll be tested for Ebola and, if cleared, released.

Peanut butter, toys and the occasional belly rub are helping Dallas? most famous pup get through a 21-day isolation period as health officials monitor him for signs of Ebola.

...Three times a day, Beckham enters the dog?s quarantine area in protected gear to play with Bentley, clean his area, feed him and play some more....

Bentley has toys that are rotated in and out to give him a variety of play, blankets to snuggle in and now, a radio set to classical music. His favorite seems to be rubber cones stuffed with peanut butter.

Nurse's dog tests negative for Ebola
WFAA and KVUE 10:46 a.m. CDT October 22, 2014

DALLAS ? When Dallas nurse Nina Pham was diagnosed with Ebola earlier this month, her dog was placed in quarantine. Now the King Charles Spaniel named Bentley has tested negative for the Ebola virus.

"At this time, this specimen collection process is only expected to happen three times within the remainder of the quarantine period," Dallas Animal Services said in a statement released on Sunday. "This is the least invasive and safest way to conduct the testing process for Bentley."...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 22, 2014

Bentley's Test Results

On Monday, October 21, samples from Bentley were sent to a lab to be tested for Ebola. The test results show that Bentley has tested negative for the virus. Specimen collection will be conducted again before the end of the 21-day quarantine period. Bentley will be monitored for a full 21-day period, similar to people exposed to the Ebola virus.

The City of Dallas Animal Services is overseeing Bentley?s care in partnership with the Texas Animal Health Commission, Texas A&M University and the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Nina Pham, Bentley?s owner, continues to be cared for at the National Institutes of Health, NIH, in Maryland. The City of Dallas and DAS are communicating daily updates to Nina on the testing throughout the process.

Bentley the Dog May Provide Answers About Ebola

By Brian Curtis
Wednesday, Oct 22, 2014 ? Updated at 9:18 PM CDT
...
Bentley is the first Ebola-exposed dog in the United States, and Green said he provides a rare opportunity for researchers. Many questions remain about animals and their role in the spread of Ebola.

?Does he shed the virus? Does he develop antibodies? Does he become ill? All three of those questions are very important to be answered at this time,? Green said.
...
Bentley?s first blood, urine and fecal tests came back negative for Ebola.
...
One of the goals of caring for Bentley is to send a message to people, especially those who may have been exposed to Ebola.

?What we don't want to have happen is people be concerned about pets exposed to Ebola and, therefore, perhaps delay self-reporting if they themselves have any early signs of Ebola,? Green said.

Nurse Nina Pham's dog tests negative for Ebola, both will be reunited Saturday
By Andreas Preuss, CNN
updated 7:52 AM EDT, Fri October 31, 2014

(CNN) -- When Dallas nurse Nina Pham left hospital after treatment for Ebola last week, all she wanted to do was hug her dog.

She'll get a chance to do that Saturday, when she's reunited with Bentley, her beloved King Charles Spaniel.

The puppy got a third negative test for Ebola, and the two are meeting after his 21-day quarantine -- the incubation period for the deadly virus...

Recovered Ebola Nurse Nina Pham and Dog Bentley Reunite in Dallas

Slobbery kisses and furry hugs were in ample supply when Nina Pham, the Texas nurse who recently beat Ebola, reunited Saturday morning in Dallas with her quarantined dog and "best friend," Bentley.

Pham, 26, was diagnosed with Ebola on Oct. 11 after treating Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan, who had died of the disease at a Dallas hospital that same week. After her diagnosis, Pham was transferred to the National Institutes of Health's hospital in Maryland for treatment and released on Oct. 24. But her pooch was still under a 21-day quarantine for testing.
