Whatcom County reports first flu-associated death
KIE RELYEA - THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

BELLINGHAM ? A 67-year-old Whatcom County woman who died Wednesday, Oct. 21, likely had swine flu, but her death was caused by multiple medical conditions she had, public health officials said.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was admitted to St. Joseph Hospital last week. A test indicated she had influenza A ? 99 percent of which is currently H1N1, or swine flu, according to Dr. Greg Stern, Whatcom County health officer.

Her death is being reported to the Washington State Department of Health as the first influenza-associated death in Whatcom County this season.

But she didn?t die from the flu, Stern said, adding that she died from her underlying conditions.
