What It Must Be Like.....

Re: What It Must Be Like.....

it could be a social, behavioral thing, without the claim
for a God to justify it.

Re: What It Must Be Like.....

gsjs, faith is a key component of Christianity, if you are able to accept on faith, THEN God gives you proof in your life with the gift of the Holy Spirit and the process of sanctification. There is proof, but it is entirely individual, on a person by person basis, my proof would mean nothing to you because you wouldn't understand it. Once you have the gift of the Holy Spirit indwelling, you understand a lot of things that meant nothing before. The Bible refers to unbelievers having a veil over their eyes, which is an accurate description in my experience. If you are incapable of faith, then the rest is "pearls before swine," all the "proof" in the world won't satisfy you.
I just had to post because of the part about being "multi religious." I didn't know if you were including some version of Christianity in that, because before I was saved I thought you could just be spiritually eclectic, but Christianity precludes belief or participation in any other religion, God wants to be worshiped on His terms, not by our convenience, and the Bible has to be accepted in its entirety, we're not allowed to pick and choose the parts we like, I just felt I had to mention that. When my husband and I got saved we felt compelled to throw away a lot of things, my spell books, our anime DVDs, anything that had a conflict with God's word, because He is a jealous God. I would have considered myself "multi-religious" and I would have thought Christianity was one of them, but now that I have read and studied the Bible I realize I had just created my own convenient "god" and it had nothing to do with the God of the Bible.
OK, I said it better that time, I won't bother you again!

Re: What It Must Be Like.....

Free Will.....it is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. You have the right to choose if you believe in God or not. Anyone who feels comfortable with saying they don't has the right to feel that way.....as long as that whole heaven\hell thing doesn't worry you! :smartass:

And about proof, sometimes you have to believe in things you can't see/prove. Otherwise you rule out some really great things in life like Love!! You can't see it either, but hopefully thats something we all have and will testify to.

Please be careful about how you make statements of Christian belief. You do not speak for the entire Christian Faith community, and many would disagree with your elistist understanding of christianity.

If I may...
We have observed that statements that reflects one's faith are natural expressions of one's being and existence. This thread "Faith-based institutions" is to support how that faith is placed into action for the mitigation of mortality and morbidity. We also have threads that address the emotional and spiritual aspects of grieving and threads on psychological considerations on disasters.

We have also observed that dialogue on different assertions of belief are not fruitful.

I agree.

Re: What It Must Be Like.....

Personal faith evolves over a lifetime; some of what was unbelievable when I was young has fallen away, and other truths are clear. I am as certain that God exists and is near, as I am that I exist.

This is an interesting article about Albert Einstein and his beliefs:
http://www.ctinquiry.org/publications/reflections_volume_1/torrance.htm

Here is a snippet:

Einstein certainly held, as his constant appeal to God showed, that without God nothing can be known, but what did he really mean by his appeal to Spinoza? Once in answer to the question "Do you believe in the God of Spinoza?" Einstein replied as follows:

I can't answer with a simple yes or no. I'm not an atheist and I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see a universe marvellously arranged and obeying certain laws, but only dimly understand these laws. Our limited minds cannot grasp the mysterious force that moves the constellations. I am fascinated by Spinoza's pantheism, but admire even more his contributions to modern thought because he is the first philosopher to deal with the soul and the body as one, not two separate things.

"Thou shalt have no other God before Me."
Nope, God speaks for the Christian community. There's nothing elitist about Christianity, it's open to everyone, but they must die to self and accept Jesus as their Savior.
If you want everyone to like you, then you can't be a Christian, because you have to speak up when you know it will make you unpopular with the world, and you have to reject sin, you can't be politically correct or agree with everyone to make them happy. Is that elitist?

Re: What It Must Be Like.....

Yes, Tygrkittn. It is elitist.

However, I believe it has been strongly suggested this discussion is not appropriate to this thread. Consequently, I will not be responding to you further. If you would like to discuss it elsewhere I will be happy to oblioge.

In the meantime, please consider and take care that your evangelica zeal does not render you a poor witness for your faith.

Snick
