What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

Jonathan was the 16 month old NYC resident who died in a Queens Hospital on May 19, 2009. The infant was mildly febrile in the morning and treated with acetaminophen by his mother. That evening his fever rose and he became cyanotic indicating he was not getting enough oxygen. His parents took him to the ER where he died about 1 hour later. The initial clinical diagnosis was Novel H1N1 Flu but the initial influenza test was negative. An autopsy was conducted and specimens were sent to the CDC. The results were expected to be reported according to Mayor Bloomberg within several days.

It has been 6 days since his death but there have been no additional information provided the mayor, the NYC Health Department or by the CDC.

Why?

TRUTH NOW! This case has been in the back of my mind as well. Haunting.

Raising the earlier Tot link from a week ago:

My link wondering if the 2 newest cases were related:

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

The CDC probably still has some backlog of cases to evaluate, but I cannot imagine they would be in any particular hurry to confirm an allegedly healthy toddler that died so quickly and violently. People might panic, especially in New York.

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

They might not be in a hurry to report the findings if they were positive but if they were negative then they would get that information out very fast. Ditto for the NYC Health Dept.

This point has been made on this forum previously.

Maybe his parents asked for some privacy after their tragedy.

Experts urge calm after influenza deaths

Parents are being warned to watch out for flu-like symptoms in their children as a virulent strain of the virus appears to have claimed the life of a sixth child.

The latest victim is a two-year-old boy from the city of Bathurst, west of Sydney, who died of a flu-related illness.

Latest news? No. This article is from a severe season of influenza in Australia during winter 2007. Multiple children died. Some after being sick less than 24 hours. Parents were scared.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/08/14/2004956.htm

The point is, kids are vulnerable. They can deteriorate very quickly. We have seen it with seasonal flu, we will see it with novel H1N1.

Why do we need to confirm this one child's diagnosis?

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

As I recall his father was quite upset with the change in diagnosis. He wanted to know what had caused his son's death. So do I.

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

Lots of folks here have lots of questions that are unanswered. I wonder if it would be possible for someone from FT to get in the queue to ask questions at the CDC briefings? I also wonder if we might somehow inspire a social justice organization like MoveOn.org to begin to push on these issues. Could we do some sort of "reporter education" to support local reporters in asking the difficult questions? Could we start an on-line petition to the government for transparency in the numbers, the "underlying conditions' narrative, details about preparedness, and the science of H1N1 as it emerges?

Just some questions about how we might engage in productive collective action from a de-cloaking sociologist...one whose mother's life was likely saved by what I learned from FT...

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

Welcome Madisonmaus!

I get in the queue at the CDC briefings every few days but I have not been selected to ask a question yet. Usually the winners are MSM like AP, Reuters, Canadian Press, etc.

That would be a good topic for the Deliberation Room. I hope you post those ideas in a new thread to gain more attention. :)

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

Did we ever learn what happened to Johathan Zamora Castillo?

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

Nina Bernstein at the NY Times did a story on his family's grief. I contacted her asking about the results of the autopsy etc.
She said she'd forward the msg to city health reporter, Anemona Hartocollis. Haven't heard anything since.

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

NYC has reported 2 swine flu deaths in children under 2 years old. I bet one of those was Jonathan Castillo, but they haven't stated that because the family would like their privacy.

Just a thought.

Re: What happened to Jonathan Zamora Castillo?

2 Months after NYC officials said that the lab results were being forwarded to the CDC for confirmation, there is NO statement on the matter.

In the orginal thread below -

Queens tot suspected to be second swine flu death in New York City
http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105092

- all the new story links have been taken down. Sometimes links are removed, but we've got links to stories still active from posts years ago. This is curious.

Some go-getter reporter out there needs to delve into this.

Someone needs to ask the question at a CDC Press Conference.

I HAVE JUST SENT THE FOLLOWING OPEN LETTER TO THE REPORTER THAT ORIGINALLY BROKE THE STORY, JOHN VALENTI @ NEWSDAY.COM

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

TO: John Valenti RE: Jonathan Zamora Castillo

Hi John,
I am a Senior User for the Global Non Profit network, www.FluTrackers.com.

Your story on the young boy, Jonathan Zamora Castillo, has really caused a stir in our group. We've been tracking that case since you broke the story a couple of months ago. The reason is that there are very disturbing similarities in his death, with regards to the 1918 Pandemic. Yours was the only story we've been able to get example of symptoms of "Cyanosis". Exremely sudden deaths in otherwise healthy patients, accompanied by Cyanosis was a hallmark of 1918.

The interesting thing is that ALL news media stories on the child have been removed from the Internet. The last word on the matter was from NYC officials saying the case was being forwarded to the CDC for lab testing. We all realize that "Quick Tests" came up negative for the virus - but that means nothing. We've documented many cases of deaths worldwide where people have tested negative up to as many as 3 times before finally dying, and eventually being confirmed. Officials even admit to huge margins of errors with those tests, which are used for guidance - not concrete confirmations.

We at FluTrackers would greatly appreciate your help / followup, to see what happened in this case.

We've recently launched a Media Campaign to gain greater exposure for our website. I assure you that we have NO objective other than to get the facts out about what is going on in the Global story regarding "Swine Flu".

Below is a copy of a press release I am currently sending out to Global Media. We hope the site will be of assistance to you as well.

PRESS RELEASE: Swine Flu Update
06/21/2009

Greetings,

Since you are part of a growing number of Media Organizations that are beginning to focus on the current H1N1 / Swine Flu Pandemic, I thought I would alert you to a future source of information. I am not sure which individuals in your organization may currently be focused on this - but if you would forward this email to any appropriate persons covering this topic, I hope it will be of assistance to them. http://www.Flutrackers.com is a non-profit global website designed to centrally collect, collate and disseminate information regarding information on this subject.

Our Forum is a collection of people from around the globe. You will find a wide variety of participants, including experienced Virologists, Geneticists and Medical Professionals. This group does a wonderful job of analyzing incoming data, and then summarizing it in a way that the average layman can understand. The data is collected by an extraordinary group of people that works around the clock, in various shifts from around the globe - continually monitoring Global News and information sites for breaking news.

All of that Data / News is posted at the site for central review. The data is categorized into topical threads, and all groups interact to discuss implications, suggest new areas of focus for everyone to search for / research on. We also have Focus Areas that collect data, discuss and make practical suggestions directed to actual preparation / response to various scenarios.

It should be pointed out that many of the world's largest groups (ie..the WHO, the CDC) have persons that monitor our site for guidance - because we are often the first source of information that leads to new observations regarding developing trends, breaking stories.

We encourage your staff be up to date on this story, because it is evolving much more rapidly than most people are aware. FluTrackers.com is very professionally monitored, and unlike many other public forums, FluTrackers has very tight policies regarding conduct. Yes, you will occasionally find spirited discussions between experts as to what a certain finding could mean (yet because these people are experts in their fields, or highly educated in the subjects discussed - this is allowed) - but overall you will simply find good solid reporting of the fact, and inclusion of links to information sources are a standard mandate. FluTrackers does not condone, nor tolerate, rumour, hearsay, unfounded speculation, etc...

We offer up our website as a source of public information for you, as you continue your efforts to report the story. We believe you will find our site reliable and informative.

Peace,

The Mountains Voice

********* end copy of press release************

JOHN,
I think you will find there is a bigger story here. However, even if you disagree, we would still love your assistance in closing the matter of what exactly the test results for young Jonathan were - and what the SYMPTOMS of some of these exploding Swine Flu deaths are! We are suddenly hitting a brick wall in regards to data/facts surrounding hospitalizations & death details. And I assure you that a review of our website will document that these cases are increasing at an alarming rate globally, and here in the U.S. But they are NOT making it to mainstream media.

Thanks for the consideration.

Peace,
David H.
