Northern Hemisphere
China (no updates)
As of 31 December, there were 3,884 cases of dengue reported in 2015 for China, with majority of the cases
being reported during September and October. From 1 to 31 December 2015, 62 dengue cases were reported
with no associated deaths. The number of cases in the month of December decreased sevenfold compared to
the number reported in the previous month (n=470) and lower than the number of cases reported in December
2014 (n=180) (Figure 1).

Malaysia
From 10 to 16 January 2016, there were 3,500 cases of dengue reported, higher than the previous week
(n=3,337). The number of cases exceeded the number for the same period in 2015 and exceeded the median
number for 2011-2015. From 10 to 16 January 2016 there were 10 dengue deaths reported, bringing the total
number of deaths for 2016 to 14, compared to a total of 8 deaths from the same reporting period in 2015.

Philippines (no update)
As of 21 November 2015, there were 169,435 suspected cases of dengue, including 511 deaths, reported in
Philippines. This is 59.5% higher compared with the same reporting period in 2014 (n=106,241) (Figure 3). From
15 to 21 November 2015 (week 46), there were 548 suspected cases of dengue reported. (NOTE: Case counts
reported here do not represent the final number and will change after inclusion of delayed reports)

Singapore
From 10 to 16 January 2016, 628 dengue cases were reported, higher than the previous week (n=549) and
higher than the number reported for the same period in each of the last five years (2011-2015) (Figure 4). From
November 2015, weekly case numbers have continued to increase in a trend that is not expected for the season

Cambodia (no update)
As of 29 December 2015, there were 15,412 cases of dengue, including 38 deaths [CFR=0.2%], reported in
Cambodia. The number of cases is decreasing and it follows a similar trend to that observed in 2011 to 2014. In
the week ending 29 December 2015, there were 183 cases reported, which is higher than the previous week
(n=65) (Figure 5)

Lao PDR
As of 15 January 2016, there were 43 cases of dengue and no deaths reported in Lao PDR for 2016. From 9 to 15
January 2016, 15 dengue cases were reported, which is higher than the previous week (n=12) (Figure 6). There is
no country level alert for the week ending 15 January 2016.

Viet Nam
As of 31 December 2015, there were 97,476 cases of dengue, including 61 deaths, reported in 54 out of 63
provinces in Viet Nam. The cumulative number of cases reported in 2015 was higher than cases reported in
2014 for the same reporting period and is also higher than the median in 2010-2014 for the same reporting
period (Figure 7). In December 2015, there were 17,033 cases reported including 8 deaths. Compared to
November (20,910 cases and 10 deaths), the number of cases decreased by 18.5%

Southern Hemisphere
Australia
As of 31 December 2015, there were 1,682 laboratory-confirmed dengue cases in Australia. In 2015, 79 cases
were reported in December. This is lower than the same reporting period of last year (n=107). The number of
reported cases was consistent with previous years (n=1720 in 2014) and follows seasonal trend (Figure 8)

Pacific Islands Countries and Areas
French Polynesia
From 1 to 17 January 2016, 120 confirmed dengue cases were reported in French Polynesia (Figure 9) including
12 hospitalizations (3 severe cases). Thirty-eight (38) of the 120 cases were confirmed as DENV-1 infection. Case
numbers in weeks 1 and 2 of 2016 substantially exceeded the epidemic threshold.

Papua New Guinea
A total of 170 cases were seen at the Daru Hospital Outpatient department, Daru, Western Province from the
4th of November 2015 to the 8th of January 2016. There were a total of 126 clinical cases and 44 confirmed
cases (2 confirmed by PCR as DENV-2). Age of cases ranged between 6 years ? 35 years of age with under 5 year
olds representing 12 % (21/170) of cases. Seven (7) severe clinical cases were admitted. All have recovered and
were discharged.

Philippines. This is 64.8% higher compared with the same reporting period in 2014 (n=121,580) (Figure 3). From
27 to 31 December, 2015 (week 52), there were 136 suspected cases of dengue reported. (NOTE: Case counts
reported here do not represent the final number and will change after inclusion of delayed reports)

Singapore
From 24 to 30 January 2016, 630 dengue cases were reported, lower than the previous week (n=636) and higher
than the number reported for the same period in each of the last five years (2011-2015) (Figure 4).

Cambodia (no update)

From 25 to 31 January 2016, 53 confirmed dengue cases were reported in French Polynesia (Figure 9) including
2 hospitalizations (1 severe case). Six (6) of the 53 cases were confirmed as DENV-1 infection. Case numbers in
weeks 1 to 4 of 2016 substantially exceeded the epidemic threshold.

Papua New Guinea (No update)

during September and October. In December, there were 62 dengue cases (with no associated deaths)
reported, which was decreased from 470 cases reported in November, and lower than the number of cases
reported in December 2014 (n=180) (Figure 1).

Malaysia
For the week from 14 to 20 February, the number of dengue cases increased to 2,785, from 2,590 cases
reported in the week prior. The number of cases was lower than the number of cases for the same period
in 2015 but far exceeded the median for this week between 2011 and 2015. Within the same period there
were 8 dengue-related deaths reported, bringing the total number of deaths for 2016 to 51, compared to a
total of 54 deaths during the same reporting period in 2015.

Philippines
As of 6 February 2016, there were 12,904 suspected cases of dengue reported in 2016, including 49 deaths.
This is slightly higher than that reported during the same period in 2015 (n=12,766) (Figure 3)

Singapore
From 14 to 20 February 2016, 594 dengue cases were reported, an increase from the previous week (n=419)
and higher than the number reported for the same period in each of the last five years (2011-2015) (Figure
4).

Cambodia
As of 2 February 2016, there were 562 cases of dengue (with no deaths) reported in Cambodia. The
number of cases remains stable and in line with case numbers observed between 2012 and 2015. In week 6,
there were 45 cases reported, compared to 102 cases reported in the week prior (Figure 5).

Lao PDR
As of 12 February, there were 135 cases of dengue with 1 death reported in Lao PDR in 2016. From 6 to 12
February 2016, 16 new dengue cases were reported, compared to 26 cases reported in the week prior
(Figure 6). There is no country level alert for the week 7.

deaths reported, bringing the total number of deaths for 2016 to 82, compared to a total of 98 deaths
during the same reporting period in 2015.

during the same reporting period in 2015.

2016, 30 new dengue cases were reported, which followed the seasonal trend (2011-2015) (Figure 6).

Viet Nam. The cumulative number of cases reported in 2016 is higher than that reported during the same period

As of 31 March, there were 91 cases of dengue reported in China in 2016 (28 in January, 45 in February, 18
in March). Compared with the same period of the previous three years (2012 to 2015), the number of
dengue cases reported in China has increased in 2016 (Figure 1).

Malaysia
For the week from 10 April to 16 April, the number of dengue cases was 1,854, a decrease from 2,031 cases
reported in the week prior. The number of cases was higher than that reported during the same period in
2015, and far exceeded the median for this week between 2011 and 2015. Within the same period there
were two dengue-related deaths reported, bringing the total number of deaths for 2016 to 92, compared
to a total of 117 deaths during the same reporting period in 2015.

to 8 April 2016, 13 new dengue cases were reported, which followed the seasonal trend (2011-2015)
(Figure 6).

in March). Compared with the same period of the previous three years (2012 to 2015), the number of
dengue cases reported in China has increased in 2016 (Figure 1).

Malaysia
For the week from 17 April to 23 April, the number of dengue cases was 1,607, a decrease from 1,854 cases
reported in the week prior. The number of cases was higher than that reported during the same period in
2015, and far exceeded the median for this week between 2011 and 2015. Within the same period there
were two dengue-related deaths reported, bringing the total number of deaths for 2016 to 94, compared
to a total of 120 deaths during the same reporting period in 2015.

Philippines (no updates)
As of 20 February 2016, there were 18,790 suspected cases of dengue reported in 2016, including 65
deaths. This is higher than that reported during the same period in 2015 (n=16,606) (Figure 3).

Singapore
From 17 to 23 April 2016, 231 dengue cases were reported, an increase from the previous week (n=225)
and higher than the number reported for the same period in 2015 (Figure 4).

Cambodia (no updates)
As of 20 February 2016, there were 663 cases of dengue (with no deaths) reported in Cambodia. The
number of cases remains stable and in line with case numbers observed between 2012 and 2015. In week
eight, there were 15 cases reported, compared to 75 cases reported in the week prior (Figure 5).

Lao PDR (No updates)
As of 8 April, there were 260 cases of dengue with one death reported in Lao PDR in 2016. From 26 March
to 8 April 2016, 13 new dengue cases were reported, which followed the seasonal trend (2011-2015)
(Figure 6).

Viet Nam
As of 29 February 2016, there were 16,967 cases of dengue, including 7 deaths, reported in 39 of 63
provinces in Viet Nam. The cumulative number of cases reported in 2016 is higher than that reported
during the same period in 2015 and higher than the median for the same reporting period between 2010
and 2014 (Figure 7). The number of cases reported in February 2016 was 30% lower than that reported in
January 2016 whilst the number of deaths increased by 5 (13,086 cases and 2 deaths).

As of 30 April 2016, there were 802 laboratory-confirmed dengue cases in Australia, which is in line with
the seasonal trend (2011-2015) (Figure 8).

20 May 2016, 141 new dengue cases and 3 new deaths were reported (Figure 6).

It shows upward trend since week 22, following the trend of 2015.

Update on the Dengue situation in the Western Pacific Region

Northern Hemisphere
China
As of 31 July 2016, there were 237 cases of dengue reported in China in 2016. This number is lower than the
number of cases reported in the same period of the previous four years (2012-2015) (Figure 1).


Malaysia
In week 32, the number of dengue cases was 1,963, a decrease from 1,819 cases (an increase by 7.9%) reported
in the previous week. The cumulative number of cases in 2016 (69,400 cases) was less than that reported during
the same period in 2015 (75,795 cases). In week 32, the cumulative number of dengue deaths was 153 cases,
compared to 212 deaths during the same reporting period in 2015 (Figure 2).

Philippines
As of 6 August 2016, there were 84,085 suspected cases of dengue reported in 2016, including 372 deaths. This
is 15.8% higher than that reported during the same period in 2015 (n=72,627) (Figure 3).

Singapore
In week 32, there were 198 dengue cases reported in Singapore. While the cumulative number of cases in 2016
(10,508) was almost double compared to that reported in the same period of 2015 (5,867), the number of
reported cases follow the same seasonal trend as was in 2015 (Figure 4).

Cambodia (No updates)
From 1 January to 17 May 2016, there have been 1,771 cases of dengue and 4 deaths reported in Cambodia. In
May, there were 168 cases and no death reported. The number of cases remains low and stable at this point
(Figure 5).

Lao PDR
As of 12 August, there were 2,719 cases of dengue with 9 deaths reported in Lao PDR in 2016. From 6 August to
12 August, 187 new dengue cases and no death were reported. Although the number of cases is higher than
previous year, it is following the seasonal trend (Figure 6).

Viet Nam
As of 30 June 2016, there were 36,639 cases of dengue including 11 deaths, reported in 44 out of 63 provinces
in Viet Nam. In June 2016, there were 5,225 cases reported including one death. Compared to May 2016,
number of cases increased by 36.7%. Compared to same period in 2015, cumulative number of cases increased
by 184.7%. Compared to the median in 2011-2015 period, cumulative number of cases increased by 102.7% and
number of deaths decreased by three.


Southern Hemisphere
Australia
As of 22 August 2016, there were 1,579 laboratory-confirmed dengue cases in Australia. The number of cases
reported has been decreasing since March and it follows the seasonal trend (2011-2015) (Figure 8).

Pacific Islands Countries and Areas
French Polynesia
In week 30, 45 confirmed dengue cases were reported in French Polynesia (Figure 9). Eleven of the 45 cases
(24%) were confirmed as DENV-1 infection.

Papua New Guinea (No updates)
From 1 January to 5 June, 67 imported cases of dengue with travel history to Papua New Guinea were reported
by Queensland Health (notifiable conditions data). Among these cases, 5 were DENV-1, 48 were DENV-2, 3 were
DENV-3, 1 was DENV-4 and 10 cases were of undetermined serotype.


New Caledonia
Since 1 September 2015 to 22 August 2016, 520 dengue cases were reported. In July 2016, 89 dengue cases
were reported (Figure 10)

China (No updates)

In week 34, the number of dengue cases was 2,249, an increase from 2,190 cases (an increase by 2.7%)
reported in the previous week. The cumula0ve number of cases in 2016 (73,839 cases) is less than that
reported during the same period in 2015 (80,654 cases). By week 34, the cumula0ve number of dengue
deaths was 166 cases, compared to 219 deaths during the same repor0ng period in 2015 (Figure 2).

Philippines
As of 20 August 2016, there were 101,401 suspected cases of dengue reported in 2016, including 422
deaths. This is 16% higher than that reported during the same period in 2015 (n=87,411) (Figure 3).

Singapore
In week 34, there were 274 dengue cases reported in Singapore. The cumula0ve number of cases in 2016
(11,003) is almost double compared to that reported in the same period of 2015 (6,342) due to higher
number of cases early in 2016 (Figure 4).

From 1 January to 17 May 2016, there have been 1,771 cases of dengue and 4 deaths reported in
Cambodia. In May, there were 168 cases and no death reported. The number of cases remains low and
stable at this point (Figure 5).

Lao PDR
As of 26 August, there were 3,119 cases of dengue with 9 deaths reported in Lao PDR in 2016. From 20
August to 26 August, 204 new dengue cases and no death were reported. The number of cases is higher
than the same 0me period in 2014-2015 (Figure 6).

In week 36, the number of dengue cases was 2,095, a decrease from 2,143 cases (an decrease by 2.2%)
reported in the previous week. The cumula0ve number of cases in 2016 (78,077 cases) is less than that
reported during the same period in 2015 (85,488 cases). By week 36, the cumula0ve number of dengue
deaths was 176 cases, compared to 234 deaths during the same period in 2015 (Figure 2).

deaths was 190 cases, compared to 261 deaths during the same period in 2015 (Figure 2).

over the 2011-2015 median; but the number of deaths decreased by four. In July 2016, there were 9 732
cases reported including one death.

were reported by Queensland Health (Quarterly report on overseas acquired mosquito borne diseases).
Among these cases, 5 were DENV-1, 57 were DENV-2, 4 were DENV-3, 2 was DENV-4 and 11 cases were of
undetermined serotype.

New Caledonia
In September 2016, 26 dengue cases were reported, and the number of cases has been decreasing since
June 2016 (Figure 10).

In week 42, the number of dengue cases was 1,462, a decrease from 1,654 cases (a decrease by 11.6%)
reported in the previous week. The cumulative number of cases in 2016 (87,890 cases) is less than that
reported during the same period in 2015 (98,508 cases). In week 42, the cumulative number of dengue
deaths was 199 cases, compared to 267 deaths during the same period in 2015 (Figure 2).

As of 31 August 2016, there were 63,504 cases of dengue including 20 deaths, reported in 44 out of 63
provinces in Viet Nam. In August 2016, there were 16,547 cases reported including four deaths. The
cumulative number of cases increased by 97% with a decrease of three deaths compared to the same
period in 2015. Compared to the median in 2011-2015 period, the cumulative number of dengue cases has
increased by 99.7%.
