Two Milwaukee sisters do not want others to experience the pain of losing a loved one like they did. They talked to WISN 12 News' Mike Miller Wednesday.


"That was nasty mosquito, yes. A very nasty mosquito," Diane Boeck said.

Muriel Boeck, 78, got a mosquito bite last summer, developed West Nile virus and died.


"She kept saying, 'What's happening to me? What's happening to me?' Because her brain was swelling, and her nerves were being attacked. And then for a while, there were days when she didn't even know us," Pat Boeck said.


"You don't know if the mosquito that's biting you has West Nile virus. You can't tell by looking at them. It can happen right here in Milwaukee," Diane Boeck said.


The victim didn't spend a lot of time outdoors in parks. Her family is pretty sure she was bitten by a mosquito just sitting on her front porch in central Milwaukee at 31st and State streets," Miller said.


Experts said it's too early to tell if more mosquitoes will mean more disease.


"Yes, I'm concerned because we're getting very wet weather now. But I'd much rather have the wet weather now than later because generally speaking, the problem with West Nile is in later summer," Dr. Richard Olds of the Medical College of Wisconsin said.


Seventy-five percent of human West Nile virus cases are reported in August and September, but the Boeck sisters said their mother would want people to protect themselves -- mainly by getting rid of standing water in their yards and using insect repellets.


"It's very, very important. She would still be alive if it weren't for that one mosquito bite," Pat Boeck said.


Some other tips to prevent West Nile virus include:


  • Stay inside at dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Repair screens on your windows and doors.
  • Wear light-colored clothing with long sleeves or pants.
  • If you are looking for a product to protect yourself, experts recommend using something with DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Eighty percent of people who get West Nile virus never show any symptoms at all.
Only about one in 150 will develop severe illness.

West Nile Virus DNA Vaccine Produces Neutralizing Antibodies in All Fully Vaccinated Volunteers in Phase 1 Trial

SAN DIEGO, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Vical Incorporated (Nasdaq: VICL) announced today that in a Phase 1 clinical trial, a West Nile virus (WNV) vaccine candidate administered using Vical's proprietary DNA delivery technology was safe and well tolerated, and produced neutralizing antibody WNV-specific responses in all 11 healthy volunteers who returned for follow-up testing after completing the three-dose vaccination schedule.

The Phase 1, open-label clinical trial study was sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and conducted at the NIH Clinical Center. The data were presented at the American Society of Gene Therapy (ASGT) 2006 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, by Julie E. Martin, D.O., a trial investigator and research scientist at NIAID's Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research enter (VRC), which developed the vaccine. The DNA vaccine used in the Phase 1 trial incorporates genetic material encoding precursor membrane (prM) and envelope (E) proteins from the West Nile virus. Vical has secured a license from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for technology used in the vaccine. This WNV vaccine candidate was jointly developed by the VRC, NIAID, NIH and Vical under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), and Vical has an option to secure exclusive commercialization rights from the NIH under the CRADA.

"This vaccine was previously shown to be highly immunogenic in animal studies, and the high rate of seroconversion in humans, as measured in this study by neutralizing antibody titers, adds to the growing body of evidence demonstrating immunogenicity with DNA vaccines in humans as well," said David C. Kaslow, M.D., Vical's Chief Scientific Officer. "Furthermore, the data encourage investigation of vaccines against diseases caused by other flaviviruses such as yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and dengue, as well as other diseases for which antibody responses may be protective."

The vaccine used in the Phase 1 trial contained a single plasmid (closed loop of DNA) encoding precursor membrane (prM) and envelope (E) roteins from the West Nile virus. Fifteen subjects were enrolled and 12 completed the vaccination schedule, which consisted of three 4 mg doses of vaccine at one-month intervals via intramuscular needle-free injection. The vaccine was well tolerated, and there were no severe adverse reactions to the vaccine. Among the 12 volunteers who completed the 3-dose vaccination schedule, 11 returned for follow-up testing. WNV-specific neutralizing antibody responses were detected in all 11, as well as in some subjects following just 2 doses.

About West Nile Virus

West Nile virus belongs to a group of disease-causing viruses known as flaviviruses that are usually spread by ticks or mosquitoes. WNV was first isolated in Uganda in 1937. It is most common in Africa, West Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. In the Western Hemisphere, it was found for the first time in 1999 in the New York City area. It subsequently spread to other parts of the United States, and by 2004 had been found in birds and mosquitoes in every state except Alaska and Hawaii.

The American robin's song is infectious. So is its blood.

A group of researchers has found that the robin ? Connecticut's state bird ? may be the prime host of West Nile virus, at least in the Northeast. They get it from mosquito bites.

"At some sites we tested, it was the major host," Peter Daszak, executive director of the Consortium for Conservation Medicine at the Wildlife Trust in New York, said Friday. "In some sites it was the almost the only host."

The researchers ? who have published their findings in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences ? also found that once the robins leave the scene and migrate south, mosquitoes spread the virus to a new favorite ? humans.

"After robins, it's people," Daszak said.

The findings involved researchers from the consortium, from the New York State Department of Health's Wadsworth Center in Slingersland, N.Y., and from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

They confirm the findings of Theodore Andreadis, an entomologist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven, who said last year that robins might be the main culprit for carrying West Nile in the state.

"It's important," the experiment station's director, Louis Magnarelli, said Friday. "In any scientific work, after you publish your findings, it's important that another lab confirm your work independently."

The New York team did its work by capturing mosquitoes that had recently fed at a series of sites in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. They were able to use DNA analysis to learn where the mosquitoes had their last meal.

They found the mosquitoes fed on robins 40 percent of the time, even though the red-breasted birds made up only 4 percent of the bird community. They also found robins had a high level of West Nile virus in their blood.

"We don't know why the mosquitoes favored robins," Daszak said. "Perhaps it's the red breast. Perhaps they have a certain scent."

Daszak said the sequence of mosquito preference ? first robins with lots of West Nile in their blood, then humans ? makes sense. Mosquitoes don't start spreading West Nile to humans until late summer or early fall ? when the birds begin to migrate south.

"It really starts to explain things," he said.

Daszak also said the group discovered that West Nile is an urban and suburban disease ? a pattern duplicated in Connecticut, where West Nile is most prevalent in the cities of lower Fairfield and New Haven counties.

"We found a lot of activity in Washington, D.C.," Daszak said. "But in some really nice forests in Maryland, we didn't."

The findings also showed, once and for all, that crows aren't the winged reservoir of the virus that researchers first thought.

Generally, the West Nile virus season starts with people finding dead crows in their yard ? crows killed by the virus. But this just shows crows are susceptible to West Nile. Robins aren't.

"The parasite never kills its host," said Milan Bull, senior director of science and conservation for the Connecticut Audubon Society.

Bull said robins are members of the thrush family.

"I wouldn't be surprised if other thrushes will be carrying West Nile," he said. "Wood thrushes, hermit thrushes, maybe even bluebirds. It's just robins are much more common."

West Nile virus was new to the U.S. in 1999, when it turned up in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. It quickly spread up and down the East Coast, then west, across the country. It's now the most common mosquitoes-borne virus in the U.S.

In 2005, there were 3,000 West Nile cases in the U.S. and 119 deaths. Connecticut saw six cases and one death.

For most people who become infected, the disease includes flu-like symptoms ? headache, aching bones and muscles, fever ? that passes in a week or so. For a few people, primarily the elderly, West Nile infection can cause polio-like paralysis, chronic fatigue, and encephalitis.

For that reason, health officials now warn the public every year to remove any standing water in their yard where mosquitoes might breed. They also suggest people wear long-sleeved shirts and pants if outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and to use mosquito repellent ? especially repellent with DEET.

Magnarelli said the experiment station has set up 91 mosquito traps in the state and is monitoring the insects' activity. Because May was so wet, there will be many patches of standing water for mosquitoes to breed in, he said.

"We're looking for a lot of things ? there's a whole list," Magnarelli said. "Last year, we found the LaCrosse virus in Fairfield. It's a Midwestern virus. This was the first time anyone found it in New England."

Bull of the Connecticut Audubon Society said the new findings should not leave people eyeing robin red-breast through the eyepiece of a hunting scope.

"It's not their fault," he said. "They're still wonderful birds. They're good insect eaters, they're good singers, they're the harbinger of spring. Life would be very dismal without robins around."

West Nile Virus season typically starts to increase in July and continues through September. These high early season numbers are not very good for the upcoming WNV season.

A 27-year-old Bakersfield man is the the state's first confirmed human case of West Nile virus this season.


The man, who is not being identified, has just been released from a hospital where he was being treated for meningitis caused by a West Nile virus infection. "This first confirmed ? infection in California reminds us that we are moving into the high-risk season with the arrival of hot weather," said Dr. Mark Horton, state public health officer, in a statement.

The California case is the fifth reported nationwide, according to the most recent data available from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The four other human cases have been reported in Colorado, Mississippi and Texas. The CDC has not received any reports of West Nile deaths this year.

The virus, which reportedly infected 68 Kern County residents last year, could be just as active in the region this year after a wet spring and hot summer, said Dr. B.A. Jinadu, Kern County health officer.

"The bottom line is we just can't let our guard down," Jinadu said. "We know it's the beginning of the season and we have to pound the pavement to educate folks and make sure at least we take the necessary precautions."

The Kern County case represents the very small minority of West Nile virus victims who suffer neurological consequences of the infection. Less than 1 percent of those infected will develop a serious illness that can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis.

About 80 percent of people infected with the virus have no symptoms, and about 20 percent will have mild symptoms including fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands or a skin rash.

Although the Kern County man is the first confirmed human case of the illness, the disease already has been detected in 31 dead birds and in 11 mosquito samples. Fourteen California counties have reported some type of West Nile virus activity so far in 2006.

Last year, California led the nation in human cases of the disease with 935, including 177 in Sacramento County. Nineteen California residents died from their infections.

"The two most important steps people can take to prevent West Nile virus is to protect themselves from being bitten by a mosquito and to report dead birds to assist the state and local agencies with surveillance effort," Horton said.

Jennifer Benito, spokeswoman for the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District, said the hot weather will jump-start mosquito life cycles, so residents should be especially vigilant as the mercury rises.

"One bucket of water alone can breed thousands of mosquitoes," she said. "Dump and drain sources of standing water."

Mosquitoes are especially active at dusk and dawn, so health officials urge people to wear protective clothing and mosquito repellent while outdoors at those times.

West Nile virus is most often spread by the bite of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are virus carriers that become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to humans and other animals when they bite.

JMHO, watch the Salton Sea area of Southern California in the coming months for signs of increased West Nile Virus activity and/or the initial presence of H5N1. The Salton Sea is a major migratory stop-over and over wintering area for birds. In this area, there is also a large migrant worker community that relies heavily upon poultry for their livelihood and have similiar living conditions to other areas that have had H5N1 outbreaks.
