West Nile virus - infections among humans and outbreaks among equids and/or birds, 19 July 2023 - ECDC

Since the beginning of the 2023 West Nile Virus (WNV) monitoring season, and as of 19 July 2023, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 3 human cases of WNV infection. This is the first week when human cases were reported during the 2023 WNV monitoring season. No deaths related to WNV infection were reported from EU/EEA countries. Cases were reported by Greece (1), Hungary (1) and Italy (1). The following regions reported cases: Serres in Greece, Hajdú-Bihar in Hungary and Parma in Italy. EU-neighbouring countries have not reported any human cases of WNV infection.

Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 19 July 2023, 10 outbreaks among birds were reported in Italy.​
