Swine flu has become a nationwide catastrophic phenomenon with every major state being affected by it. The city of Kolkata seems to be its next target with two new cases being reported on Monday and one of which is a woman who is in a critical condition. Both the patients have been hospitalised in private hospitals.

[h=1]Two die of swine flue in West Bengal[/h] Kolkata: Two persons died of swine flu in separate parts of the state Wednesday, a senior health official said.




A man in his late-50s from Chandannagar in Hooghly district died due to swine flu, while another resident of Mumbai, who was holidaying in the city, succumbed to the disease, Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Moloy Dey told PTI today.
"We have news of two deaths due to swine flu in the state. We are taking stock of the situation and necessary precautions have been taken," Dey said.
Talking about the number of people affected by the H1N1 virus in the state, Dey said, "We do not have an estimation (of the number of people affected) at the moment but we are ready to face it with all might."
Reports of 216 deaths due to swine flu have been reported from across the country within the first 10 days of this month taking the toll to 407 this year, mostly in states like Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Swine flu claims life in Hooghly, 9 affected in Kolkata

KOLKATA/HOOGHLY: After claiming lives in Gujarat, Telangana and Pujnab, swine flu claimed its first victim in West Bengal on Wednesday. Rupali Ghosh, 62, from Chandernagore died at a nursing home in Bhowanipore on Wednesday morning. Her swab samples tested positive to H1N1 on Tuesday.

31 swine flu cases in Kolkata

Kolkata:As many as four fresh cases of swine flu were detected here in the last two days, a West Bengal health department official said Tuesday. However, there have been no fresh deaths.

As many as 31 people have been afflicted with influenza, with two deaths recorded in Kolkata so far.

"The total cases are 31 till Monday. No additional deaths were reported. The state is stocked with the required drugs and the situation is under control," State Health Secretary Moloy Dey told IANS.

Kolkata: An eight-year-old boy died today due to swine flu, taking the toll in the state to three since January, a health official said.
"The boy, who was admitted in a critical condition seven days back at BC Roy Hospital in Beliaghata, died early this morning. He stopped responding to treatment and was put on ventilation," Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Moloy Dey told PTI.

Murshidabad toddler dies of swine flu

KOLKATA: Swine flu claimed its fifth victim in the state on Sunday when a two-and-a-half-year-old died at BC Roy Children's Hospital. Another child died of H1N1 in the same hospital on Friday.

Tarannum Khatun of Murshidabad's Bhagabangola was admitted to the hospital on February 6 with fever and respiratory distress. As her condition deteriorated, she was put on ventilation three days later. Samples sent to National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) confirmed H1N1 on February 12. Doctors at the hospital had said since the beginning that her condition was critical.

Swine flu toll in Bengal now 6

The number of deaths due to Swine Flu in West Bengal has reached 10 after the virus claimed two more lives on Thursday.

A 77-year-old resident of Haridevpur, Padmaoalash Dutta died of Swine Flu in a private hospital at Tollygunge on Thursday. Another patient named Krishna Acharya, aged 40, died in a private hospital in South Kolkata on the same day.

A resident of the city succumbed to swine flu early this morning, taking the toll to nine in the state since January as eight new cases of H1N1 infection were reported.

"The patient in his late 30s remained in a critical condition for the past couple of days. He was shifted to a private hospital from a nursing home on Wednesday, where his condition deteriorated. He died early this morning," West Bengal Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy said.

5 flu deaths in city in a day

KOLKATA: Five swine flu deaths were reported from different hospitals in the city on Saturday ? the highest single-day toll so far. This takes the death count to 13 in the state.

Among those who died on Saturday are two children and three elderly women. With 10 new swine flu cases detected the same day, the number of affected has reached 199. "Currently 59 patients are undergoing treatment, including 22 in government hospitals. The rest ? 127 people ? have been treated and discharged," said director of health services Dr B R Satpathy.

A 50-year-old man died of swine flu at a private hospital in the city, taking the toll in Bengal to 14.

The New Alipore resident, Debashis Chakraborty, died at Medica Superspecialty Hospital.

Health officials said 14 new swine flu cases had been detected on Sunday, taking the total number of people affected to 213.

On Saturday, there were reports of five deaths in city hospitals. But a health department official claimed that one of the five deaths reported was not caused by swine flu.

With one more person succumbing to swine flu in the city this afternoon, the toll due to the H1N1 virus in West Bengal reached 14 since January.

"A 40-year-old man who was suffering from swine flu died on sunday afternoon. His condition was quite critical for last couple of weeks and he was on ventilation," West Bengal Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Moloy Dey said.

Swine flu toll mounts in Bengal, one more succumbs


Kolkata, March 9 (IANS): Swine flu has claimed one more life in West Bengal, taking the toll to 15, an official said on Monday.

As many as 13 fresh H1N1 virus positive cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, he said.

"On Monday, one more death was reported. The state figure for number of deaths is 15 and the total number of cases now is 226," principal secretary for health and family welfare Malay Kumar De told IANS.

Ranchi/Jamshedpur, March 10: Swine flu snuffed out three lives in Jharkhand since yesterday midnight as the state, grappling with inadequate treatment facilities, continues to face a steady influx of people from outbreak regions.

A 40-year-old mother of three, who had been in the grimhold of the H1N1 virus at a private nursing home in Ranchi since February 27, breathed her last on ventilator around 6pm today. Doctors said she lost her battle for life following renal and respiratory complications, besides elevated blood sugar level.

A 29-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman had died at two private hospitals in Jamshedpur late last night, even hours before their throat swab reports, which arrived from Calcutta's National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases this morning, confirmed the infection.

Kolkata: Adding to the list of Swine Flu victims further, the city registered another death on Wednesday. Biswanath Chakroborty succumbed to Swine Flu at ID Hospital in Beliaghata.
On the other hand the victim?s family accused the hospital of gross negligence leading to Chakraborty?s death. The death toll rises to a total of 18 in Kolkata after this death.
