MALDA, WEST BENGAL: Seven infants have died in the past 24 hours at West Bengal's Malda Medical College and Hospital, which witnessed frequent crib deaths in the recent past.

Hospital deputy superintendent Jyotish Das said the infants were aged between 0-28 days and had complaints of low birth weight, malnutrition and respiratory problems.

At least 11 infants died in the government-run Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in the past 72 hours, bringing into focus again the poor condition of government hospitals in West Bengal. Three infants died on Thursday, while two died on Wednesday. Six babies passed away on Tuesday. The hospital authority has confirmed the deaths.

?Most of the children who died were underweight and suffering from septicemia and other ailments,? M A Rashid vice-principal and superintendent of MMCH told The Hindu over telephone.

Crib deaths at West Bengal's Malda Medical College and Hospital continues unabated with three more babies dying since Friday to take the toll to 18.

"Three more babies, all brought here in very critical condition, have died since Friday. Since Monday 18 babies, mostly newborn have died," Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal M.A. Rashid said adding that all the infants were either underweight or malnourished.

The infant deaths at the Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) have resurfaced, this time with the death of five newborns in the past 24 hours.
As many as 22 crib deaths have been reported in the last six days.
Though relatives of the newborns alleged lack of attention and care at the hospital, MMCH authorities, as usual, blamed asphyxia, underweight and acute infections for the death of the newborns.
MMCH sources said that five newborns (between one day and seven years of age) died between yesterday morning (6 am) and Monday (6 am).A 10-month-old daughter of Tanushri Mandal of south Dinajpur, one-day-old male baby of Kabita Haldar from Manikchak, 19-day-old daughter of Pushpa Roy of Old Malda, one-day-old daughter of Dilara Bibi from Harischandrapur and seven-year-old Sabera Khatun from Gazole reportedly died in the past 24 hours.

MALDA: Malda Medical College and Hospital has admitted that 25 babies have died in the hospital in the last six days. According to college authority, six babies died on November 2, two on November 3, four on 4th, five on 5th, four on 6th and four on November 7.
