Malda infant deaths 132 in January 2012
Monday, 30 January 2012

Behrampore and Malda : In the last one month more than 132 infants have lost life in west bengal district of Malda ,Atleast 60% of population in this district ar minorities and Mamta which rode to sucess on minority votes is dam caring about the deaths in this district. There seems to be no end in sight to the horror of infant deaths in West Bengal. From Malda, which recently witnessed the shocking death of 15 babies within 48 hours at a government hospital, the focus has now shifted to Murshidabad. 10 newborns have died in the last two days in a state-run hospital in Behrampore in the district. This time too, it's the sheer apathy of the administration that has led to the tragedy.

The hospital has just 30 beds but it has admitted 110 children - more than triple the number of cases it can accommodate.

Children in India have been critically underweight for millenia. That they do not have the ability to fight off whatever is killing them is not surprising. However, this does not address the issue of what is making them sick to begin with. What is going on here?

Re: West Bengal: Infant deaths - 117 infants die Jan 1-30 at Malda Hospital; 10 fatalities at Murshidabad hospital in 48 hours; 8 deaths at BC Roy

Figures I've seen for West Bengal estimate 40,000 fatalities in children under 5 each year. Many of these are from pneumonia, diarrhoea and other preventable diseases.

Malda has seen significant infant mortality this winter. There was a cluster of baby deaths in mid November, another in late December and now this latest in January. Other hospitals have also seen death clusters. In many cases, the final cause of death seems to be pneumonia, exacerbated by a very poor, overcrowded hospital. Up to 60 children and their families in a 12 bed intensive care ward. Dogs and cats in the hospital.

One other point of concern - an outbreak of illness killed 300 chickens in a village outside of Malda on Dec 30. As of yet I have not seen any follow up report on that.

There was confirmed H5N1 in Nadia in Sept 2011 in chickens - about 70 miles from Kolkata.

BC Roy hospital in Kolkata has had infant death clusters in June and October of last year as well as a relatively small one in January.

Behrampore and Jangipur hospitals in Murshidabad had concurrent death clusters in October 2011 and Behrampore has also seen increased fatalities this January.

The latest cluster in Kolkata is concurrent with reports of dead crows in the city.

My guess is that in the babies case, we are seeing increased deaths primarily due to winter diseases and poor healthcare. Unfortunately, the Indian Integrated Disease Control Project has failed to update its weekly disease outbreak report page this year, so no help from that quarter with regard to diagnosis.

While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is busy in the green pastures of the Sunderbans, the procession of infant deaths continues to haunt district hospitals with the figures reaching a staggering 150 in the last one month without minimum steps being taken by the government to arrest the neo-natal fatality.

Though the chief minister continues to say that the reports of child deaths in different hospitals in the state are cooked up stories by the media and most babies who died were underweight and suffered from malnutrition, the fact remains that in the last 48 hours 19 babies died in government hospitals at Bankura and Malda taking the cumulative figure to more than 150 in the last two months.

Don't keep asking on infant deaths: Mamata to media
NEW DELHI: Congress on Thursday advised ally and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to focus on preventing infant deaths instead of making political points over it, a blunt statement which appeared to flow from the rocky relationship between the UPA partners.

The deaths have triggered a furore in the media, with political rivals blaming it on Trinamool Congress's apathy towards real issues. An agitated state CM retaliated with comparative figures to claim that child mortality rate in Bengal was lower than in other states.
