The Malda Medical College (MMC) has hit the headlines yet again, and for the same reason. The hospital saw seven more children dying between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. In the past 48 hours alone, 15 babies have died. An expert team headed by Dr Tridib Banerjee, chairman of the taskforce monitoring childcare facilities in state-run hospitals, visited the hospital on Thursday.

"One baby died in the SNCU and the rest in the neonatal care unit. Dr Banerjee will submit his report to chief minister Mamata Banerjee," said Debasis Bhattacharya, principal, Malda Medical College.

The state has come under attack over the hospital referral system, as more than 100 children have died in the BC Roy Memorial Hospital for Children, Burdwan Medical College, Jangipur sub-divisional hospital and MMC since July 2011. Most of the infants had been referred to the big hospitals without being given proper medical attention at the district and sub-divisional hospitals.

“Among the seven infant deaths in Malda hospital, two were brought to the hospital dead, while the rests were almost dead. There was no scope for treatment. A new-born should have an average weight of 1.5 kilograms, but here the new-borns weighed between 500 to 700 grams, which is underweight,” the chief minister elaborated.
Ridiculing her claims, leader of Opposition Surjyakanta Mishra who is also the former health minister of the state said: “She has made a new discovery in India. Her claim regarding the reduction in the infant mortality rate in the state is also not true. The rate had decreased during the Left Front’s time. The chief minister’s explanation on baby deaths is not at all satisfactory.”

Two babies die in front of Bengal minister during surprise visit to Malda hospital

MALDA: A surprise visit to Malda district hospital turned out to be a shock for child and women welfare minister Sabitri Mitra on Sunday.

"Only God can help us," she cried, after seeing two babies die before her eyes. Mitra spent nearly an hour at the hospital shooing cats from the maternity ward and trying to make sense of the chaos. The beds - and floors - were overflowing with patients. There were people crying out for help.

But there was no hospital staff around. Exasperated, the minister called the ward master, hospital superintendent and other officials. But all of them were either on leave or in Kolkata on some official tour. There wasn't even a security guard to be seen.
