Infant deaths haunt BC Roy hospital again

Eleven babies died at the BC Roy Children's Hospital here since yesterday in a rerun of the 18 crib deaths in June there.

Six of the babies died yesterday and the remaining five today, hospital Superintendent Dilip Roy said here.

Roy said delayed admission of the babies who were already in a very critical condition led to the deaths.

Kolkata: After BC Roy Hospital, 12 children death have been reported from Burdwan Medical College in the last 24 hours. Six of these children have died of encephalitis. Director of Medical Education and Bengal Health Commissioner have rushed to Burdwan to assess the situation.

Meanwhile 4 more infants have died at the BC Roy Hospital in the city, with this the total death toll has climbed to 17 in less than 3 days.

Baharampore: Twenty six children have died in two governments hospitals in Murshidabad district since Friday, a senior Health department officer said on Sunday.

The Chief Medical Officer Health (CMOH) Shahjahan Siraj said 16 children have died in Baharampore District Hospital and 10 in Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital.

The CMOH said most of the children, who died in the two hospitals, were suffering from respiratory problems, malnutrition, septicaemia and other serious diseases and were referred to these two hospitals from the primary health centres in critical condition.

There was no respite from crib deaths in Bengal with more children succumbing to their ailments at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, and four more dying at the BC Roy Children?s (Referral) Hospital, State Health Department sources said.

At least 12 children died at BMCH between Wednesday and Thursday, Hospital Deputy Superintendent Tapas Ghosh conceded. While seven infants died from Encephalitis the other deaths were reported on account of low weight he said.

The BC Roy deaths continued not to be due to negligence of the medical staff, State Health Directorate claimed quoting in-house sources. Director of Health Sushanta Banerjee said a committee was instantly formed to probe the reasons behind the BMCH deaths and reports would be submitted before Chief Minister who also handled the Health portfolio.

Children deaths: Kolkata hospital says situation normal

Authorities at BC Roy Children's Hospital, which has been in news for a series of crib deaths in the last few days, today said the situation was normal even as there were unconfirmed reports about the death of one more infant.

"The situation is normal at the hospital, but we will not be able to provide any data," hospital superintendent D Pal said when asked if any fresh infant death was reported.

After 17 babies died at the hospital since last Tuesday, the authorities have decided not to speak to the media. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who holds the Health Department, also declined an answer and asked that Health Secretary Sanjay Mitra be contacted.

Mitra, on his part said, "The situation at the hospital is absolutely normal, but one or two infant deaths on an average is a daily occurrence."

The number of infant deaths in West Bengal continues to rise with latest reports revealing 17 more deaths in space of the last 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths to 30 in the last three days.


All of the deaths occurred at the state-run Burdwan Medical College and BC Roy Children's Hospital with the later accounting for 17 deaths. The health authorities are yet to find out the exact cause that led to the deaths.

In summary;

Since Wednesday there have been 12 fatalities in Burdwan Medical College and 18 at BC Roy, both in Kolkata. Also since Friday, 16 children have died in Baharampore District Hospital and 10 in Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, both in Murshidabad.

No further ?unusual? crib deaths reported

No ?unusual? crib death was reported on Saturday in either the Dr. B.C. Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Science in the city or the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, both of which were in the news this week for the high incidence of deaths of babies.

Asked about the spurt in crib deaths, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the Health portfolio, declined comment.

Mrinal Kanti Chatterjee, principal of the Dr. B. C. Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Science told The Hindu: ?There have been no unusual deaths reported today. Being a tertiary facility, some deaths always occur at the hospital.?

Five more babies have died at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, days after 13 crib deaths were reported from the premier hospital in the West Bengal district but the authorities maintained there was nothing alarming in the death figures which was normal.

Three babies died in the paediatric ward and two in the nursery where new borns are kept since yesterday, due to low weight, a senior hospital official said.

"I have information that five crib deaths have taken place in the past 24 hours, one of them a stillborn baby," Principal Dr Sarit Choudhury, who is on leave, said when contacted.

"However, let me assert such deaths are quite normal for babies having low birth weight. But the hospital always tries to avert a single such incident. We are monitoring the situation," Choudhury added.

Four days back 12 babies had died at the hospital and one on Thursday and the hospital authorities had claimed the one-to-three days old babies were underweight and suffering from jaundice, encephalitis and septicemia.

Audit of baby deaths

Calcutta, Nov. 4: Mamata Banerjee has directed the health department to audit child deaths in all state-run hospitals so that steps can be taken to reduce infant mortality rate.

The chief minister has also asked health officials to improve infrastructure at maternity and paediatric wards in rural hospitals.

Health department officials said the shortage of doctors, nurses and Group D staff was the main hindrance in improving the infrastructure.

Fresh crib deaths in West Bengal
Malda (WB), Nov 10: (PTI) In the latest instance of crib deaths in West Bengal, six babies have died at Malda District Sadar Hospital in the last two days.

Malda District Sadar Hospital Superintendent H K Ari said the deaths occurred in the Neo-natal unit in the time span of 24 hours from 12 AM on Tuesday.

The babies were in the age group of 0 to nine months and were suffering from broncho-pneumonia, Ari said.

While two newborns died soon after birth at the hospital, others were brought there from villages and nearby areas, he said.

The areas include Mahananda Pally on the outskirts of Englishbazar town and villages such as Manikchak and Kaliachak and the tribal dominated Bamungola block, he said.

36 babies had died at several district hospitals and the referral B C Roy Children's hospital in Kolkata in October.

Malda (WB), Nov 12 (PTI) One more baby died today in a hospital here, taking the toll of children to 14 in Malda district since Tuesday. A new born died in the hospital in the afternoon as the infant was suffering from broncho-pneumonia and other serious ailments, hospital sources said. 36 babies died in several district hospitals and the referral B C Roy Children's hospital in Kolkata in October.

Malda (WB), Dec 23 : In the latest instance of crib deaths in West Bengal, five babies died in the neo-natal unit of Malda District Sadar Hospital.

Aged between one month and two months, the babies had been referred to the hospital from far-flung areas and died last night, hospital superintendent Himadri Kumar Ari said.

All the babies were admitted with critical conditions, mostly with respiratory problems, he said.

Several newborns died in this government hospital last month.

MALDA: Eight more newborns have died at the Malda District Sadar Hospital since Monday, taking the crib death toll in the institution to 26 since November 9.

Hospital superintendent Himadri Kumar Ari said two newborns died on Monday night, three yesterday and another three this morning.

Three infants died on Wednesday due to congenital problems, he said. Of the 26 deaths, 18 were referral cases and 8 were new-borns, he added.

Six babies have died in the neo-natal unit of Malda District Sadar Hospital, days after a task force formed to look into the 26 cot deaths in the facility last month had attributed low hygiene levels and inadequate work force for the fatalities.

While five babies died on Thursday night, one passed away on Friday morning, doctor R.R. Samanta told reporters here.

Aged between one month and two months, the infants had been referred to the hospital from far-flung areas with critical conditions, mostly with respiratory problems, he said.

In Kolkata A month after 36 children died in one week at Malda District Hospital in West Bengal, seven infant deaths were reported on Friday at the medical centre.

The hospital authorities have said most of the babies were critical when brought in. They have cited hypothermia and birth asphyxia (choking) as the reasons behind the crib deaths. With Malda reeling under a cold wave, temperature hovering between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius, hospital sources say the toll might go up.

Malda (WB): Three more children died at Malda Sadar Hospital on Saturday taking the number of crib deaths in the State-run facility to nine in the past two days. While three children died in the hospital, six other deaths occurred during Thursday-Friday, acting Superintendent Dr RR Samanta said, adding that most of them were new-born babies.

In Kolkata Three infants died at the a state government-run hospital of Malda district on Saturday, a day after seven deaths were reported.

Three-year-old Izam Haque, who died of asphyxia (suffocation) and hypothermia, had been admitted to the hospital on Friday.

The second child died barely a couple of hours after birth, also due to asphyxia. The third baby, a five-day-old from Bamongola, had been admitted on December 22.

Chief Medical Officer Swapan Jhariat said that the children had been brought in a critical state.

23 children die in 10 days in a Birbhum hospital

A total of 23 babies have died in the past 10 days at a government-run hospital here in Birbhum district. Manabendra Ghosh, Superintendent of Suri Sadar Hospital, said 23 babies died between December 15 to 24 while 49 infants died in the past one month in the hospital.

Of the 49, only three were about a year old who were suffering from pneumonia or septicaemia, Ghosh said, adding the others in the age group of 0-7 days, were born in the hospital and were underweight. As the number of deliveries increased in the hospital, the number of baby deaths also went up, he said.

While there were 9,500 deliveries in the hospital last year, the figure reached 15,000 this year, Ghosh said.

Claiming that the hospital?s average rate of children deaths was 1.57 per day which was ?better than many hospitals in the state?, he said death of 23 babies in 10 days pulled the average on the higher side.

Malda:

The death toll of infants in the last seven days has risen to 21 with five more new-born dying today in the government-run Malda Sadar Hospital here, according to acting superintendent of the hospital M A Rashid.

He said the cause of the death of the five new born babies, in the last 24 hours, was due to under-weight and breathing problem.

"We are trying our best to tackle the problem but we have a weak infrastructure here. However,We are trying to address all these issues," said Rashid.

Earlier, the hospital had reported death of 26 babies in a period of six days from November 11.

Reports of crib deaths have been coming from various parts of the state recently.

While 23 babies died in 10 days since December 15 in Suri Sadar Hospital, 12 children died in a day on October 28 in Burdwan Hospital. Another eighteen infants died at B C Roy Memorial Hospital For Children in Kolkata.

Malda, communicate formula: Malda Medical College on Friday, killing three children. All children had pneumonia and breathing difficulties. The incident occurred when the Director of Medical Colejej Sushant Banerjee have visited here.
Banerjee, who arrived here with ten members of the team visited Malda Medical College. Many relatives of dead children in the order reported. Banerjee after meeting with district health officers of health in the building. He will soon increase in beds in the pediatric department.
The past month has been a string of deaths of children in Malda. Cold and so far 30 children have died from other causes. The former was created utter chaos. Was accused of medical Laprwari. The government had assured the immediate control. Still can not improve that situation. This is why the Director of Medical Colejej Sushant Banerjee, can not believe anyone is assured. There is resentment among the local population.

Five Crib Death in 24 Hours in Malda Medical College: Toll Rises to 21 in Seven Days

MALDA, 29 DEC: Five more newborns died in last 24 hours in Malda Medical College and Hospital (MNCH) taking the toll to 21 in last 7 days. Furious reaction came from local Congress MLA as the doctors expressed their helplessness to curb the death. The MNCH authority conceded that altogether 147 babies died in last 52 days and most of them were born in this hospital itself.
