Flood situation worsens further in E Midnapore

The water levels in Kangsabati and Subarnarekha have started receding at various points in affected areas of both the West and East Midnapore districts, but the flood situation in Tamluk and Nandakumar blocks in East Midnapore turned grim today, with newer areas being submerged.

Meanwhile, the death toll in floods in the district has increased to nine today with the deaths of two people in Midnapore. This apart, a child and a 60-year-old died of enteric disease in Belpahari yesterday. Over 100 villagers have been affected, 30 of whom are in hospital.
Additional district magistrate (General) Mr Sushanta Chakraborty identified the dead as Kalipada Sardar and Sambari Singh. A contaminated well is suspected to be the source of the outbreak.
People living in Ghatal, Daspur, Chandrakona, Sabang, Pingla and other few affected areas where flood water stays for days are now in grip of a diarrhea epidemic. Most of Daspur and Chandrakona areas are waterlogged and outbreak of waterborne diseases is a cause for worry for the district health department.
Some cases of diarrhoea and dysentery have already been reported from flood-ravaged areas which are waterlogged for the past few days and the figure is rising.
A few cases of respiratory infection have also been reported from some areas. Doctors and other medical staff are striving hard to combat the situation.
