Eight crib deaths in Bengal hospital

Crib deaths are back to haunt West Bengal hospitals with at least eight infants dying at the Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in Malda district since Wednesday.

"In the last 24 hours, eight babies, all below one year of age, have died in the hospital. The babies were born premature and were suffering from low weight and respiratory problems," MMCH principal Uchchal Bhadra said.

Nine infants die in Malda hospital in WB

At least nine infants have died at the Malda Medical College Hospital, which witnessed many crib deaths last year.

The babies died last night. The cause of the death of the infants, all below one year, was due to premature birth, low weight and respiratory problem, College Vice Principal M A Rashid said on Thursday.

A seven-member inquiry committee under chief medical officer of health, Malda has been formed by the district magistrate to look into the cause of deaths. The committee will submit its report within 24 hours, he said.

Malda: Three more infants died at the Malda Medical College Hospital, taking the total number of crib deaths at the facility in the past three days to 12.

"Three babies died in the past 24 hours. All of them were underweight and below one year. They were suffering from respiratory problem and had septicaemia," College Vice Principal Dr MA Rashid said.

Death toll rise to 16 in Malda infant deaths

As the death toll in the death of infants in Malda medical college hospital rose to 16, a three member expert team on Sunday ascertained that the casualties were caused due to malnutrition and low weight.

Four more infants Saturday night taking the toll since May 22 to 16, as the expert team headed by the joint director of Medical Education Research and Training (MERT) Dr Indrajit Saha said malnutrition and low weight was the cause for the deaths.

Purulia, June 10 (PTI) Fifteen infants, admitted with various complications, have died at a government-run hospital since Friday in West Bengal's Purulia district.

Of the 15 infants mostly in the age group of 0-11 months, 10 were boys and five were girls, Superintendent of the Sadar Deben Mahato Hospital, Nilanjana Sen said today.

31 infants die in 4 days at Kolkata hospital

KOLKATA: 31 infants have died at the state-run B C Roy hospital here in the past four days, official sources said.

Health department sources here said that terminally-ill infants were brought from private hospital or nursing home to this hospital and "in some cases nothing can be done".

Kolkata: 35 children die in city hospital in 5 days
Kolkata: Altogether 35 children died at the city's state-run B C Roy Children's Hospital in the last five days. The largest referral children's hospital in the eastern region had been in the news for a large number of crib deaths in the past few years.

"Thirty five child patients have died in our hospital in the last five days and almost all of them were brought in a moribund condition," hospital sources said, denying any medical negligence on the part of the doctors and nursing staff.

The state health department formed a three-member probe committee which gave clean chit to the hospital and ruled out any negligence on the part of the authorities, sources said. Eight child specialists were also sent to the hospital to assist the attending medical staff.

Clean chit to hospital on death of 36 infants

Kolkata, 7 Sept: The state government today virtually washed its hands from the crib deaths at Bidhan Chandra Roy Hospital as the two member committee constituted to probe into the matter gave a clean chit to the hospital officials for the death of 36 infants over the last five days.
The government has blamed the critical condition of the infants and the callousness of the referring private hospitals for the casualties.
"The newborn who were shifted were in a very serious condition and died within 24 hours of admission. Most of them were from private and district hospitals and suffering from fever influenza, pneumonia and malnutrition among other critical ailments," said Mr Tridev Banerjee, chairman of the high-level task force.

49 infants die at B C Roy in 7 days, govt says 'all's well'

In the news for a long time owing to large number of crib deaths, the state-run B C Roy Children's Hospital in Kolkata has reported another 49 infant deaths in the last seven days, including seven in the last 24 hours.

"Forty-nine child patients have died in our hospital in the last seven days, and almost all of them were brought in a critical condition," hospital sources said.

However, the state government gave a clean chit to the hospital. Quoting reports submitted by a three-member probe committee set up by the health department, Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya said no medical negligence by the hospital authority had been found.

3 more babies die in Malda hospital, toll rises to 18

Three more infants have died at the state-run Malda Medical College and Hospital taking the toll to 18 in the last four days, hospital sources said on saturday.

All the three babies who died since yesterday were underweight and had developed respiratory distress immediately after birth, the sources said.

Fifteen new-born babies who were brought to the Malda Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition had died since Tuesday, the sources said.

Earlier, during the four-day Durga pujas from October 11, 17 newborn deaths were reported from state-run Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital in Bankura district.

Crib deaths continues in Malda Hospital; 21 perish

At least 21 babies died in the state-owned Malda Medical College and Hospital till early today.

The deaths occured during the past 72 hours. Most of the infants were aged between one year and eighteen months, hospital sources said.

Meanwhile, a blame game has begun with Union Minister of state for Health and local Congress MP Abu Hasan Khan Chowdhury yesterday blaming the state for the sordid affair.
