West African woman being tested for Ebola in Australian hospital

PERTH, Australia, Oct 26 (Reuters) - An 18-year-old West African woman is being tested for Ebola after emigrating to Australia from Guinea with eight other family members 11 days ago, state health authorities said on Sunday.

The woman, who has been in home quarantine and monitored by health authorities since her family's arrival, was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on Sunday after telling health workers she had developed a fever, Queensland chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young told a media conference.

She was now in isolation at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, with the results of the first test for Ebola to be known early Monday.

A second test would be taken in three days, Young added, saying it was unlikely she was suffering from Ebola.

"She didn't have any known contact with anyone that was sick with Ebola virus disease, but she did come from an area that had a reasonably large number of cases," Young told a press conference, adding that the young woman was not a healthcare worker.

The woman, 18, arrived in Brisbane 11 days ago with eight members of her extended family and all had been placed in home quarantine immediately, CMO Dr Jeannette Young told reporters in Brisbane.

They had departed Guinea to move to Queensland.

Queensland Health knew the family was arriving, met them at the airport and arranged their quarantine.

Staff were checking the family's health daily and on Saturday night the 18-year-old developed a fever.

'She's otherwise well,' Dr Young said.
