Whooping cough cases up to 28 in Grant County ​

The Grant County Health District continues to see new cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, and is up to 28 cases since August, officials said Tuesday.

Cases are coming from Quincy, Ephrata and Moses Lake, with some linked by household members or close contacts. But the origin of some illness are unknown.​

No one is hospitalized with whooping cough, but an infant died from it Aug. 24.​

Whooping cough outbreak in Snohomish County

(SNOHOMISH COUNTY)? Health officials are reporting an outbreak of whooping cough in Snohomish County, with more cases during the first two months of this year than in all of 2010.

Last year, there were 25 cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, in Snohomish County.

Dr. Gary Goldbaum, the health officer for the Snohomish Health District, 43 cases have been confirmed so far this year and an additional 23 suspected cases have been reported...

GRANT COUNTY, Wash. - On Monday, April 25th the Grant County Health District received a report of a 3 month old infant with Whooping Cough (Pertussis). Through the investigation it was determined that there is one additional case in the household. At this time the patients are at home and not hospitalized...

...Since the beginning of the outbreak in August 2010, Grant County Health District has investigated 32 cases and over 270 case contacts (between 2005-2009, Grant County averaged less than three cases of Pertussis per year). All of the Grant County reported cases are from Quincy, Ephrata and Moses Lake. Some cases have been linked together by household members or close contacts, but many of the exposures remain unknown. The Grant County Health District continues to recommend all people who are not up to date on pertussis vaccine (Tdap for school aged children and adults or DTaP for younger children) update their shots promptly.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has seen a sharp rise in pertussis (whooping cough) cases in recent weeks. In July, 18 pertussis cases were reported in Pierce County. The Tdap vaccine is recommended for all residents ? adults and children?as an effective way of to increase community immunity to the disease...

(GRANT COUNTY, Wash.) -- The Grant County Health District reports three new cases of Whooping Cough involving children. The children are from Moses Lake, Ephrata and Quincy. Health officials say none required hospitalization.

Since the beginning of the outbreak a year ago, the Grant County Health District has investigated 38 confirmed cases of Whooping Cough (Pertussis), with nearly 500 people who have come in contact with the infected. Between 2005-2009, Grant County averaged fewer than three cases of Pertussis...

Snohomish County infant dies of whooping cough

An infant from east Snohomish County died earlier this week from whooping cough, what is believed to be the first local death from the disease in more than a decade.

The baby died on Tuesday and was less than a month old, according to Snohomish Health District officials.

The Snohomish County infant died at a Seattle hospital. The public health agency learned about the infant's illness on Aug. 5, but didn't know about the hospitalization until the day before the baby died, he said.

This is the second whooping cough death in Washington this year. The first occurred in April in Yakima County and also involved a baby, said Donn Moyer, a spokesman for the state Department of Health.

The Snohomish County infant is one of 52 whooping cough cases confirmed in the county so far this year. That's more than double the number of confirmed cases during all of 2010.

Cases of whooping cough in Cowlitz County have soared this year, prompting health officials to urge members of the public to make sure they are up-to-date with their vaccinations.

The Cowlitz County Health Department reports 53 confirmed cases of whooping cough ? more formally known as pertussis ? so far in 2011. The number of cases ranged from two to 25 a year between 2003 and 2010, the department reported Wednesday. The county has highest rate of whooping cough in the state this year...

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Two babies died within days of each other in the Tri-Cities this past week, and SIDS is believed to be the cause, but the health department is digging deeper.

The Benton County Coroner's office contacted the health department to see if it could be Pertussis or "Whooping Cough," which is often deadly for babies.

One baby, a 5 month old boy from Pasco died on October 7th, The other child, a three month old female from Kennewick died October 12th...

GRANT COUNTY-- Grant County health officer downgrades whooping cough outbreak, county continues to experience increased number of cases...

...During 2011, 29 whooping cough cases were reported. In the course of the 16 month outbreak there were 57 cases, including one infant death was investigated by the Health District. In the five years previous to 2010, Grant County experienced 1-4 cases per year.

Whooping cough is a threat in Washington State as the number of cases has increased by over 40% between 2010 and 2011. This year, two infants died due to whooping cough, (Yakima and Snohomish counties)...
