Des Moines teen tests positive for Zika after first blood sample tossed

SEATTLE - A local teenage girl who traveled to Haiti has tested positive for the Zika infection weeks after county public health officials said she didn't qualify for testing and her initial blood sample was tossed out.

The girl, Olivia Evans, 17, of Des Moines is the second confirmed case in King County, and the fifth confirmed case in Washington state.

The Highline College student says she got about 50 mosquito bites on the trip. After returning home, she got very sick, her limbs swelled, she developing a large rash, and she had sore joints - all symptoms of the Zika virus and many other diseases.

... "I don't think we've ever had an experience where our doctor ordered something and it was denied somewhere else. That was shocking to me," says Olivia's mother, Marla Evans. "Why wouldn't they want to test."
Patient privacy laws also prevent public health officials from speaking about a specific patient's case. But the director says when there isn't a commercial test available, public health officials have the right to screen potential candidates for testing.
"Because we have very limited ability in the whole country to test for Zika virus, those samples that do get submitted are ones that really need to be there," said Dr. Jeff Duchin, Health Officer for Public Health - Seattle and King County...
