image001.jpg

BFHD has been investigating several gastrointestinal illnesses in our area. At this time, no common source of food or water contamination has been identified. We are waiting on lab testing to identify the cause, but the symptoms and timing resemble norovirus infections.

Norovirus is a group of viruses that can infect people and cause gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines). Infections can cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach cramping. The illness is sometimes referred to as ?stomach flu,? but it is not related to the flu, which is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus.

Norovirus travels the fecal-oral route. It is highly contagious and usually spreads person-to-person. It can also spread through contaminated food or water or when people handle objects that infected people touch.

Norovirus is found in the vomit and feces (diarrhea) of infected people from the day they begin to feel ill and for 2 weeks or more after they feel better. People are likely most contagious during the first 3 days of illness.

People should not prepare food for others while symptomatic and for 3 days after symptoms resolve. Children and infants should stay home from school and daycare if they are vomiting or have diarrhea.

Symptoms of norovirus usually go away within 48 hours without medical care. However, severe dehydration can be life-threatening and require medical assistance.

These illnesses are another reminder that proper handwashing can help keep you healthy! Remember to wash your hands with soap and water often throughout the day, especially after the bathroom and before you eat.

Healthy 23-year-old woman dies from flu-related complications

...
Meanwhile, there is also concerns about a norovirus.

Dr. Dhirendra Kumar, with Doctors Express, said if you contract the norovirus, it can be more deadly than the flu.

?It is pretty dangerous if you don?t get any attention,? said Kumar.
...
At Century ballroom, the nororvirus is being blamed for Susan Balshor?s death. She was a waltz instructor who died about two weeks ago.

?Disbelief and shock. I am still reaching the acceptance it?s unreal,? said co-worker Gavin MacDougall.

The dance company says they are still waiting for an autopsy, but they believe Balshor?s symptoms point to the norovirus. She was sick on a Monday and dead on a Wednesday.

?She was very healthy; we were told she had never been sick I am told in over a decade, so it was a surprise,? said MacDougall.
...
The state does not track the norovirus like they do the flu but there are reports of the virus spiking across the country.

Several cases of norovirus have surfaced, apparently connected to a restaurant in Gig Harbor.

According to the Tacoma Pierce County Department of Health, 18 people have been sickened.

It's believed a few people contracted the bug at the Blazing Onion, took the germs home, and infected family members...

The restaurant reopened at 5 p.m. Tuesday and issued this statement: "We received reports that some of our guests fell ill on Saturday. We immediately contacted the Pierce County health department, and together determined that this was not a food borne illness but an aggressive flu-like virus.

100 call in sick, possible virus closes school

Posted: May 11, 2013 5:53 PM CDT Updated: May 11, 2013 5:53 PM CDT

SPOKANE, WA (KXLY/CNN) - A fast spreading virus in Washington has shut down an elementary school with 100 of the students calling in sick.

The Longview Elementary School playground was eerily quiet for a Friday. A quick glance at the signs out front explains why.

"Maybe four or five students that, throughout the day, said that their stomachs started hurting and they wanted to go home," Rogelio Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez now has a three day weekend. His dad was surprised to hear more than 100 students had called in sick.
...
The Grant County Health District thinks it's an outbreak of the norovirus.
