Spokane County Reports First Flu-Related Death of the Season

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) has confirmed the first influenza-related death in Spokane County for the current flu season. The individual, a county resident in their 70s with underlying medical conditions, passed away this week. They were one of seven residents hospitalized for flu complications so far this season.
“This heartbreaking loss reminds us how dangerous influenza can be,” said Dr. Francisco Velázquez, Spokane County Health Officer. “Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the individual who passed.”
Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. While anyone can get the flu, certain groups—including adults 65 and older, young children, pregnant individuals, American Indian and Alaska Native populations, and people with chronic health conditions—are at greater risk for severe illness or complications.
During the 2024–2025 flu season (October 1–September 30), the Washington State Department of Health reported a total of 504 flu-related deaths statewide. Spokane County saw 53 deaths and 888 hospitalizations last season.
