Washington (CNN)Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Friday that a member of her staff has died after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

"A member of my team who worked in the office of legal counsel recently tested positive for Covid-19 and he passed away this morning," Bowser said at a news conference.

Coronavirus renders U.S. Capitol a ghost town through most of April

House won't be back until April 20 at earliest; Capitol extends temporary closure to visitors through April amid health crisis

The halls of the U.S. Capitol — usually teeming with lawmakers, staff, press and visitors — will remain mostly empty over the next three weeks as health officials continue to urge Americans to take personal steps to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer advised members Monday that they should not expect to be called back to Washington until April 20 at the earliest. Senate Republican leaders have indicated that they do not plan to return to Washington until sometime after the Easter recess.

And the Capitol will remain closed to visitors through May 1, the Senate and House sergeants-at-arms announced in a joint statement Monday. The sergeants-at-arms first temporarily banned public access to the Capitol because of the health crisis on March 12.

DC Youth Services Worker Dies of Coronavirus, in 2nd Death of City Employee

A man who worked for the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services for more than a decade died Wednesday of coronavirus, becoming the second city employee to die of the virus.

Kenneth Moore worked as a youth development representative, most recently helping at-risk youth at the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, the DYRS director said.

“We share our deepest condolences with his family and loved ones,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a news conference Thursday morning.

Officials announced 67 additional cases of coronavirus Thursday morning. A total of 653 cases in D.C. were known. Twelve people with the virus died.
