To date for the 2011-12 influenza season, one influenza A (H3N2) isolate from Washington was sent to CDC for antigenic characterization by hemagglutination-inhibition testing. This specimen was found to be closely related antigenically to the influenza A (H3N2) component of the vaccine (A/Perth/16/2009-like).

During week 7, 22 (7.3%) of 302 specimens tested by the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Laboratories in Washington were positive for influenza. During the past four weeks, 81% of positive specimens have been influenza A viruses. Almost all subtyped influenza A specimens were influenza A H3 viruses.

Both the proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) and emergency room visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) remained below baseline.
