Parents warned about possible case of mumps at Ferndale High School

One person at Ferndale High School could have the mumps, and public health officials are working to identify students and staff who may have been exposed to the ill person.

36 cases of mumps reported in Pierce County
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department reported Friday there are 36 cases of mumps in the county, and have affected students in Fife, Puyallup and Tacoma. Damian Dovarganes AP

Mumps has now affected students at a fifth school in Fife, bringing the number of cases in Pierce County to 36.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department confirmed Friday that a student at Surprise Lake Middle School has the mumps.

The student is not in school and may not return until no longer contagious.

Health officials did not release the age, gender or grade of the student...

CURLEW - State health officials have confirmed two mumps cases in Ferry County.
In a statement made last week, officials said a single isolated, probable case had been identified in Ferry County. No mumps cases were reported in Stevens or Pend Oreille counties.

An ongoing outbreak of the mumps virus has continued to grow in Washington state, with at least 367 people either diagnosed or suspected of having the mumps, according to the Washington State Health Department.

The vast majority of those infected have been school-aged children, according to Paul Throne, manager of the Washington State Immunization Program. Of the school-aged children infected in this outbreak, 87 percent were up to date on their mumps vaccinations, Throne said today, but lower vaccination rates among school-aged children in general may be contributing to the growth of the outbreak...

[h=4]WARNING ? Mumps outbreak in Washington State.[/h] Mumps has spread and health officials urge immunization. The Washington State Department of Health reminds people across the state to take precautions to help stop the spread of mumps.
It?s especially important for you to take precautions during winter holiday social gatherings. Avoid kissing, hugging and other close contact with anyone who is suspected of having mumps. If you have been exposed to mumps and feel ill, stay home to help prevent the spread of the disease and contact your healthcare provider. If you don?t have a healthcare provider, call your local health department or the Family Health Hotline at 1-800-322-2588.
