THE NEW YORK TIMES
WASHINGTON - A federal judge on Thursday ordered the government of Barack Obama to give the warning to drug companies that soon the government could prohibit the common use of antibiotics in agriculture popular in animals because the practice could encourage the proliferation of threatening infections and endangering public health.

The warrant issued by Judge Theodore H. Katz Southern District of New York, restart a process that the Federal Government Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began 35 years ago in hopes of preventing penicillin and tetracycline, two of the country's most popular antibiotics, lose their effectiveness in humans due to its widespread use in animal feed to promote growth in chickens, pigs and cattle.

The order was issued two months after the Obama administration announced restrictions on agricultural use of cephalosporins, a class of antibiotics that includes drugs such as Cefzil, and Keflex, which are commonly used to treat pneumonia, strep throat staphylococcal and infections of the skin and urinary tract.

FDA is expected within days to issue rules that prevent the use of tetracycline-peniclina and very popular in agriculture, in animal feed to increase growth, the same problem that Katz sought. A decade ago, the FDA banned the use in agriculture indiscrimnado of a powerful class of antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, including Cipro bedicina popular.

The court order could accelerate the efforts of the FDA to restrict common agricultural practices, which microbiologists and other medical researchers believe that lead to growth of bacteria resistant to common antibiotic treatments, which many doctors say it has cost thousands of lives .

A vast majority of antibiotics used in the U.S. is still administered to animals, not humans. Meanwhile, outbreaks of disease due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria have grown in number and severity.
