Influenza activity remains intense in Wallis and Futuna. It is fueled by this period of gatherings for the end-of-year festivities.

Under pressure, the healthcare services in the region have adapted to the epidemic to avoid overloading the emergency department.

The health agency has extended consultation hours. Consultations are now available Monday to Friday until 7:00 PM and on weekends until 9:00 PM;

H1N1 influenza affects all segments of the population. Dr. Bruno Cojan, director of the public health department at the ADS, warns of the ongoing epidemic and answers questions from Lafaela Liufau.

The symptoms of H1N1 influenza are generally a sudden onset of fever above 38°C or chills without associated fever, with a cough or sore throat.

To slow the spread of the virus, the population is asked to apply preventative measures, especially avoiding close contact with sick people.

If you are sick, avoid festive gatherings; this will protect those you love and others.

Stay in isolation, ventilate rooms in the house, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands regularly.

In care centers, wearing a mask is still mandatory and visits to hospitalized patients are limited to one person at a time.

With the period of gatherings for the end-of-year festivities, the H1N1 flu finds a favorable environment for its development.

The most vulnerable individuals are pregnant women and those with risk factors (respiratory failure, bronchopneumopathy, diabetes, heart failure, and kidney failure).
