Wales: Swine flu begins to spread

SWINE flu is beginning to spread from person to person in Wales as the virus gains a foothold in the nation.

The first cases of secondary spread have been identified in Wales, marking a new chapter in the progression of the H1N1 virus.

Two women, aged 36 and 38, in Caerphilly borough and a 10-year-old girl in Wrexham have caught the virus from an infected person in their homes.

Until now all cases of swine flu identified in Wales had been linked to cases in England, Scotland or abroad.

But there is no evidence of community transmission in Wales yet ? the nation remains about a month behind the majority of the UK, with 62 cases compared to more than 6,400 in England.

The first secondary spread cases were confirmed yesterday as a fourth death in the UK was linked to the virus.

Tests have revealed that a 19-year-old man from south London, who died on Wednesday, had the virus. He also suffered from underlying health problems

There is definitely community transmission in wales. Tonight my daughter is on the way to the hospital to pick up tamiflu for my 4 year old granddaughter. She hasnt even been seen by a doctor. When we described her symptoms to the doctor he told us to pick up the tamiflu immediately and we have also been told not to have contact with anyone for 2 weeks. We were not aware that the illness was in our area. It is not being reported. None of our family has been in contact with anyone who has been abroad recently.
