Vulnerable Children With H1N1 Influenza and Consolidations on X-ray Should Be Admitted to Intensive Care: Presented at RSNA

CHICAGO -- December 6, 2010 -- Although H1N1 influenza ("swine flu") resembled the standard influenza when it arrived in 2009, children with pre-existing medical conditions should still be x-rayed and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) if consolidations are present in the lungs, researchers stated at the 96th Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Jordi Muchart, MD, Hospital St. Joan de D?u, Barcelona, Spain, led a team of researchers in retrospectively reviewing data from 240 patients diagnosed with H1N1 flu between August of 2009 and February of 2010. In all, 123 patients had x-rays, said Dr. Muchart, who presented his video poster here on November 28.

Of the patients with x-rays, 67 required hospitalisation, and 6 received treatment in the ICU. In the outpatient group, 40% had an abnormal chest x-ray -- mainly because of peribronchial thickening and ground-glass opacities. Of those admitted to the hospital, however, 61.2% had an abnormal chest x-ray, partially due to the existence of consolidations. Pleural effusion and cavitation were found in patients in the ICU in particular, although that finding was not statistically significant.
