A highly contagious streptococcus bacteria sickened as many as 150 inmates at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport over the weekend, and authorities have put the jail on lockdown and suspended visits by families and friends until the outbreak is over.

Dr. Dolores Burroughs-Biron, health services director for the state Corrections Department, said Monday that no inmates have been hospitalized. She said one inmate was taken to the emergency room of a local hospital with a high fever but was returned to the prison after receiving treatment...
