Virus Outbreak Infects Horses Statewide

An outbreak of an equine herpes virus has infected horses statewide. The virus has caused Virginia's state veterinarian to shut down all horse shows, and public horse sales.
Several northern Virginia counties have been quarantined. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced yesterday that it would cancel all horse shows, and public horse sales because of how highly contagious and potentially fatal the virus is.

The airborne virus poses no known threat to humans but it affects horses' respiratory systems and can cause neurological damage. The Virginia Horse Show Association has recommended no shows until at least March 11th.
