CENTRAL VIRGINIA (WRIC) — In a press conference Wednesday morning, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and the Virginia Department of Health confirmed another coronavirus case — bringing the state total to nine.

The ninth case of coronavirus is in the Chickahominy Health District. Health officals said the person did travel internationally.

Gov. Northam said Virginians should expect the number of cases to keep increasing.

RICHMOND, Va. -- A Central Virginia patient has tested “presumptive positive” for the coronavirus.

The positive test was reported in the Chickahominy Health District which includes Hanover, Goochland, New Kent, and Charles City counties.

The patient has been identified as a male teenager in Hanover County, according to Chickahominy Health District spokesperson Caitlin Hodge.

Hodge says the teen recently traveled to a country that has ongoing community transition of COVID-19. While she wouldn’t specify which country, she confirmed that it’s on the CDC’s Level 3 Travel Health Notice countries.

State government officials sought to stave off alarm Wednesday over the nine confirmed cases of COVID-19 found in Virginia this week, including the first confirmed case in Central Virginia.
The latest case, in Hanover County, is someone who had traveled internationally, health officials said.
"We just received the test results this morning so we are actively investigating that," State Epidemiologist Lilian Peake said Wednesday, "but we do know that the person had traveled to a country that has a Level 3 alert."
Gov. Ralph Northam said Wednesday Virginia is not under a state of emergency, but said state officials are “prepared to do so if needed.”..

Of the nine Virginia cases, four are believed to have been exposed to the coronavirus while on a cruise on the Nile River in Egypt.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has removed criteria that has to be met before a test can be performed, the state laboratory still has a limited number of test kits and is only testing cases that meet certain criteria, including relevant travel history, symptoms and risk factors...

Nine people have tested positive for the virus in Virginia.

The patients include a U.S. Marine who is assigned to Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County and lives at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Prince William County, two Fairfax City residents, an Arlington resident, a Spotsylvania County resident in his 50s and a Loudoun County resident in their 40s.

The Marine "recently returned from overseas, where he was on official business," the Pentagon said in a statement. He started showing symptoms on Feb. 14 and returned to the U.S. several days later.

One of the Fairfax City residents to test positive is a man in his 80s who went on a Nile River cruise and began to develop symptoms on Feb. 28, officials said. He was hospitalized March 5. His spouse later tested positive.

The Arlington patient is in their 60s and "developed fever, cough and shortness of breath after having returned from international travel," the state health department said.

A Loudoun County resident in their 40s tested positive after "attending Christ Church Georgetown," the county announced. The resident is a member of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, the county fire chief confirmed. "No other personnel who were in contact with this member are known to be experiencing any symptoms," the chief wrote.

"The positive test result is considered a presumptive positive, pending confirmatory testing by CDC. The patient is currently doing well and is isolated at home," the county said.

Another patient in the Ashland area was diagnosed after traveling internationally.

Additionally, health officials urged congregants and visitors to the Immanuel Chapel of the Virginia Theological Seminary to monitor themselves for symptoms after the organist at Christ Church Georgetown who has the virus spent time there.

An Alexandria resident who had close contact with the organist at Immanuel Chapel has tested positive, health officials announced Wednesday.

Thirty-six patients previously tested in Virginia came back with negative results for COVID-19.

The Commonwealth was monitoring dozens of people for coronavirus-related health concerns.

Peninsula Health District Confirms Five Positive Cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

(Newport News, Va.) – The Peninsula Health District (PHD) announced today that five people, in addition to the two positive cases announced yesterday, have tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). All the cases reside in James City County. Four of the new cases are contacts of the original two cases. The fifth new case has an unknown exposure and the investigation is ongoing to identify where he may have acquired the virus. The five new cases were included in the statewide count of cases on March 13 on the VDH website at www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus.

“These five new cases make this a community outbreak of COVID-19,” said Peninsula Health District Director Dr. Thomas Franck. “The fact that one of these cases has an unknown exposure is concerning and is suspicious for community spread.” This is a continually evolving situation, and the Peninsula Health District (PHD) will continue to keep people informed.

The PHD has activated its incident management team and is deploying all necessary resources in an attempt to contain this outbreak. PHD is working with the Virginia Department of Health and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide the best possible guidance for the community.

Virginia reported its first death due to the coronavirus on Saturday.

The patient was a man in his 70s who contracted the virus from an unknown source, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Health. The man’s cause of death was respiratory failure.

The man was one of eight patients diagnosed so far in James City County.

Commonwealth of Virginia Reports First COVID-19 Death
in the Peninsula Health District

(Richmond, Va.) — Today, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Peninsula Health District reported the death of a hospitalized patient who previously tested positive for COVID-19. This event marks the first death in the Commonwealth of Virginia due to COVID-19.

The patient was a male in his 70s who acquired COVID-19 through an unknown source. The cause of death was respiratory failure as a result of COVID-19.

“On behalf of the entire Commonwealth, we express our deepest sympathy for the family and loved ones of the patient who died, as well as the families of everyone who has been affected by this outbreak,” said State Health Commissioner M. Norman Oliver, M.D., M.A. “The health of our residents and the community is our top priority, and we will continue working together to care for the patients, protect the safety of health care workers, and protect the people in our Commonwealth.”

This case was recorded by VDH when it was first identified.

The Peninsula Health District has activated its incident management team and is deploying all necessary resources in order to contain this outbreak. Public Health officials are reaching out to all identified contacts of COVID-19 cases.

The Peninsula Health District has been working very closely to identify people who have been in potential contact with people known to have tested positive for coronavirus. They are interviewing affected people and giving instructions on how to protect themselves and others.

To lower the risk of respiratory germ spread, including COVID-19, the Virginia Department of Health encourages the following effective behaviors:
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with sick people.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Virginia Department of Health said Monday that a second person who lived in the Peninsula Health District and had COVID-19 died from the virus.

VDH said the patient was a man in his 70s who contracted coronavirus through an unknown source.

The report of the death came two days after health officials said someone else died in the district. That person, who lived in James City County, also was in his 70s. He was the first person to die in the Peninsula Health District and the first person to die in Viriginia as a result of COVID-19...

Peninsula Health District Reports Second COVID-19 Death

(Newport News, Va.) — Today, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has reported the death of a hospitalized patient who previously tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

The patient was a male in his 70s who acquired COVID-19 through an unknown source. The cause of death was respiratory failure as a result of COVID-19. This new case will be included in the statewide case count today on the VDH website at www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus.

“It is a sad day in our community as we learn that a local resident has died from COVID-19. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. We will continue to work toward a day where no one dies from this virus,” said Peninsula Health Department Acting Director Dr. Steve Julian, MD, MBA, FACS. “The Hampton/Peninsula Health District is working closely with our community healthcare partners to assure the best care in response to the Pandemic.”

Those who have been in close contact with people who have COVID-19 are at the greatest risk of exposure. People with suspected or confirmed exposure should reach out to their healthcare provider to be evaluated. Please call ahead to the office and let them know you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19.

The Peninsula Health District Call Center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. For COVID-19 questions, call 757-594-7069.
