Health authorities in Cambodia have placed under a tight watch the village of Rokar Chuor Timuoy in Prey Veng province, some 30 miles southeast of Phnom Penh after 1,200 ducks suddenly died in a new outbreak of bird flu.

Kao Phal, director of the Agriculture Ministru's animal health department said the village will be placed under close monitor for 30 days to prevent the outbreak from spreading to other villages. Another 400 ducks were slaughtered by the authorities in the affected area.

On Saturday, the government confirmed the outbreak of H5N1 virus among ducks in the said village. Animal health officials say some of the ducks started showing symptoms of bird fly on August 2 and the following day, some 1,000 ducks suddenly dropped dead.

Cambodia's Agriculture Minister Chan Sarun urged on national television, the public to be on "high alert" for bird flu. He also gave strict orders to enforce a ban on the import of poultry from neighboring countries and the trade of poultry near the affected village.

Ly Sovann, director of the Health Ministry's disease surveillance bureau, on Sunday said his office has not yet monitored any of the villagers in Rokar Chuor Timuoy of showing symptoms of the virus.
