Vietnam metro enters third day without new H1N1 case

Ho Chi Minh City has recorded no new influenza A (H1N1) cases since Saturday, while another infection was detected Monday in a Mekong Delta province.

Of 23 H1N1 flu patients detected so far in HCMC, 13 have been discharged, the city Health Department said Monday.

Health authorities also spotted 14 passengers with high temperatures at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport Monday and have quarantined them for further examination. Vietnam requires inbound passengers found with fever to be isolated for seven days.

The Health Ministry confirmed on its website Monday that another H1N1 flu patient had been discovered in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang.

Tran Chanh Dai, 14, is a relative who?d had contact the first-detected flu patient in the province, the ministry said.

Nationwide, 26 people have been found infected with the H1N1 virus so far, 22 of them returning to Vietnam from flu-hit areas and four others falling sick after coming in contact with the infected travelers, the ministry added.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said as of Monday, the H1N1 virus (also known as swine flu), which was first detected in Mexico in April, has infected nearly 30,000 people in 74 countries, causing 145 deaths.

WHO declared A (H1N1) flu a global pandemic last Thursday.

Trickster passengers

Many sick passengers who flew to HCMC took fever medication to cheat temperature scanners at the airport, leading to the discovery of several infected cases later, Reuters has cited Tien Phong (Pioneer) newspaper as saying.

Nguyen Van Chau, head of Ho Chi Minh City's Health Department, was quoted in Tien Phong as saying several passengers took fever medication three hours before arrival.

"That's why when they passed through the airport; the body temperature scanners skipped them," Chau said.

Clinical investigations of the infected cases revealed they had taken fever reducers, Chau said.
