Rice exports jump 87 percent
Rice companies signed export contracts totaling 4.76 million tons as of June 10, up 87 percent from a year earlier, Tuoi Tre reported, citing the Vietnam Food Association.
The orders are worth US$1.3 billion, a 51 percent year-on-year increase, the association said.
It also said around 3.2 million of the grain had been shipped as of June 10.
Several Mekong Delta provinces last week suggested the government raise this year?s rice export target to six million tons from the current 5.2 million tons as they have large stockpiles and expect two more bumper crops by the end of this year.
The delta, which produces about 60 percent of the national rice crop and supplies 99 percent of Vietnam?s export rice, will harvest around two million tons of rice in the third quarter, Saigon Tiep Thi reported, citing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
