Vietnam reviews lessons learned from 2006 bird flu fight

The Vietnamese government held a conference Monday in Hanoi to draw out lessons learnt from the fight against bird flu in 2006, and chalk out action plans to deal with the pandemic this year.
At the meeting, with Standing Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung in attendance, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development filed a report pointing out critical factors that had given rise to the return of bird flu last year.
Deputy Minister Bui Ba Bong pointed the finger at the complacency of authorities and people in bird flu-hit provinces, saying their lax implementation of preventive measures was to blame.
Bong lambasted inefficient controls on the smuggling of infected fowl in border provinces, and admitted cold weather made for a ripe environment for the spread of the disease.
The insufficient inoculation of free-ranging fowl would remain the main source of the epidemic, Bong warned.
Speaking at the briefing, Deputy PM Nguyen Sinh Hung instructed agencies concerned to beef up preventive measures as well as bolster the elimination of epidemic zones.
He also stressed the urgent need of enhancing public awareness of the disease.
Last Thursday, the National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Control reported that five localities, including Vinh Long province, Can Tho City in the south and Hai Duong, Ha Tay provinces, and Hanoi in the north had sites with bird flu outbreaks.
