May 23 (Xinhua) -- A 30-year-old man from Vietnam's northern Vinh Phuc province has been contracted bird flu, becoming the first human infection case in the country since late 2005, local newspaper Pioneer reported Wednesday.
Initial test showed that the man from Me Linh district has been infected with bird flu virus strain H5N1, the paper quoted sources from the Bach Mai Hospital in the capital of Hanoi where he is being treated.
The man was hospitalized nearly a month ago, after having fever, cough and breathing difficulties. Earlier, he killed chickens for his friend's wedding party.
With the new case, Vietnam has detected 94 bird flu patients, including 42 fatalities since the disease started to hit the country in December 2003.
Now, the bird flu is hitting four Vietnamese provinces, namely Quang Ninh, Son La and Nam Dinh in the northern region, and Nghe An in the central, and southern Can Tho City, which killed or led to the forced culling of nearly 26,000 fowls, according to the Department of Animal Health under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) -- Vietnam on Wednesday confirmed its first human bird flu case in a year and a half, as the virus continues to spread through the country's poultry stocks.
A 30-year-old man from northern Vinh Phuc province remains hospitalized and breathing through a respirator after testing positive for the H5N1 virus three days ago, said Tran Quy, director of Bach Mai hospital in Hanoi.
"The man is in critical condition," he said. "He has a high fever, difficulty breathing, coughing, and the X-ray of his lung was completely white. All these are typical bird flu symptoms."
Quy said the man was admitted to the hospital last week. Relatives said he had helped prepare chickens for a wedding reception before falling ill.
It is the country's first human infection of H5N1 since November 2005 and comes as bird flu outbreaks among poultry have been reported in southern, central and northern Vietnam.
Samples of the virus will be shipped to a World Health Organization lab for analysis and reconfirmation, said WHO country representative Hans Troedsson.
"We are following up with the Ministry of Health about it to get more details," he said. "Since we know there is a risk for transmission to people, it's not really a surprise. It could just be one isolated case."
Vietnam had been hailed a success story for beating back the virus that began ravaging Asian poultry stocks in late 2003. A nationwide mass poultry vaccination program, coupled with strong political will, brought the virus under control after it killed 42 people in the country. No poultry outbreaks were reported in 2006, but the virus flared again early this year.
The H5N1 virus remains hard for people to catch, but experts fear it could mutate into a form that spreads easily among people. It has killed up to 185 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.:tiphat: http://edition.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/conditions/05/22/vietnam.birdflu.ap/index.html

Here is a map of human H5N1 cases in Vietnam by province. About 25 cases reported by WHO in 2005 are not included on the map because the provinces for these individuals were not reported. However, the map does include about 11 individuals which were unconfirmed but most likely part of local human clusters.

It is worth noting the the United States executive order making H5N1 a quarantiable disease was signed April 1, 2005, right after a physician at Sweden hospital in Quang Nihn developed adute respiratory distress (and subsequently died).

The Veterinary Department, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, added that samples of dead birds tested positive to virus H5N1. The new findings have brought the number of affected provinces and cities to five, including the northern mountainous province of Son La, the central coastal province of Nghe An and the rice bowl of Can Tho in the south. The Veterinary Department also said so far 48 out of 64 provinces and cities nationwide have almost finished the first vaccination campaigns on poultry to inject two shots to each bird. Poultry need four shots each in two vaccination drives a year in prevention of the epidemic.
Despite the relapse of bird flu on poultry, Viet Nam managed to keep the virus away from human beings.

No human infection cases have been reported over the past 18 months from November 14, 2005, reported the Central Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute.

It added that repeated tests on samples taken from two patients under medical
treatment at the Ha Noi-based Bach Mai Hospital have not yet made it clear whether the patients are infected with influenza type A virus or not. Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Cao Minh Quang said Taminflu still plays a key role in preventing and treating bird flu in Viet Nam.

?We always store good enough supplies of the medicine (Taminflu) and raw materials to meet demands for influenza type A treatment in all conditions,? said the senior medical expert.
The ministry has also allowed the treatment of normal flus with Taminflu after careful research and tests in an effort to improve the treatment quality and efficiency, he added.

?Viet Nam is also taking steps to boost the domestic production of anti-H5N1 virus vaccines to catch up with the world trend for the control of bird flu on human beings by shifting to preventive measures in combination with taking Taminflu,? concluded the Deputy Health Minister.:tiphat: http://www.vnanet.vn/Home/EN/tabid/119/itemid/197163/Default.aspx

Vietnam reports another human bird flu case

Vietnam confirmed a new human bird flu case Friday as the latest outbreak swept through 14 provinces within the last month.
A worker at a slaughterhouse in Hanoi had tested positive for the H5N1 virus strain, Nguyen Duc Hien, head of the National Institute for Tropical Diseases, said.

He was admitted to the institute May 26, just 12 days after starting to work at the abattoir. Hien said the man was recovering and his condition stable.

Director of Hanoi?s Bach Mai Hospital, Tran Thuy Hanh, said in the past two days two patients had been admitted with typical bird flu symptoms, one of whom had died Friday.

The hospital had taken samples from them for tests, she added.

New outbreaks

Meanwhile, tests have confirmed that all 300 ducklings culled on a farm last Monday in the northern province of Hung Yen had the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

An agriculture ministry report said that on May 30 around 200 ducks on a farm in another northern province, Ninh Binh, had also tested positive and been culled. Ninh Binh reported its first bird flu outbreak among ducks Monday.

Neither flock had been vaccinated against H5N1, the ministry said.

Earlier, on Friday, the ministry said the virus had struck a second province, Quang Nam, in the central region this week, killing 370 ducks.

In early May bird flu broke out among ducks in Nghe An province 500 km north of Quang Nam, the first case on the central coast.

The outbreak in Hung Yen Monday brought to 14 the number of areas infected in Vietnam in the past month. They lie from Son La in the country's far northwest to Can Tho city in the Mekong delta in the far south.

Agriculture minister Cao Duc Phat has warned that Vietnam is on the brink of another bird flu epidemic among poultry after the virus spread rapidly in May. Experts have called this outbreak unusual since the flu normally peaks in cool weather.

Last week Vietnam reported its first human case of H5N1 in a year and a half when a 30-year-old man in a province near Hanoi was infected. His condition was improving, doctors treating him said.

Bird flu has killed 42 people in Vietnam since it resurfaced in Asia in late-2003. Despite sweeping control measures, including mass vaccinations of poultry, the virus reemerged in 2005, last year, and once earlier this year.

Globally the virus has infected 309 people in 12 countries, killing 187 of them, according to the World Health Organization.

Indonesia said Friday that a 15-year-old girl died in central Java after contracting the disease. She had handled a dead chicken for cooking, an official said.

New outbreak of bird flu in Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam, June 1 (UPI) -- The deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza was confirmed Friday in a poultry worker in Vietnam.

Nguyen Duc Hien, head of the National Institute for Tropical Diseases, said that the man has been hospitalized since last Saturday and is recovering, the newspaper Thanh Nien reported. He became sick 12 days after starting work at a Hanoi slaughterhouse.

Tran Thuy Hanh, director of the Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, said that two people have been admitted to the hospital in the past two days with flu-like symptoms and one has died. But she said tests must still be done to confirm the H5N1 strain.

The latest outbreak in Vietnam began a month ago and has spread through 14 provinces.

At least 42 people have died of the H5N1 strain since 2003, when it appeared in Southeast Asia. The strain rarely spreads to humans and has mostly appeared in poultry workers or other people who have been in contact with infected birds.

Bird flu infects slaughterhouse worker
June 2, 2007

A Vietnamese man who works at a poultry slaughterhouse outside Hanoi has been infected with bird flu, the country's second human case in less than a month, state media on Saturday quoted a doctor as saying.

The man was taken to hospital with fever on May 26 and tests conducted in Vietnam confirmed he had the H5N1 virus, doctor Nguyen Duc Hien who heads the hospital treating the man told the Thanh Nien newspaper.

He told the paper the patient was in stable condition.

Hien could not be reached for comment.

Last month, Vietnam reported its first human case of H5N1 virus infection in a year and a half, a 30-year-old man in a province neighbouring Hanoi who became sick after helping slaughter chickens at a friend's wedding.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said it was working with the Vietnamese government to verify that suspected case.

Hien said three more people had been admitted to his hospital in recent weeks with serious pneumonia, and one of them had died.

Doctors had suspected the three had bird flu but tests showed they did not, the doctor told Thanh Nien.

Bird flu has hit chickens and ducks in 13 provinces and in Can Tho city since early May.

A total of 42 Vietnamese have died since the virus re-surfaced in Asia in late 2003. It then re-emerged in 2005, last year and early this year.

The virus has infected 309 people in 12 countries, 187 of whom have died, according to WHO figures. These did not include the death on Tuesday of a 15-year-old Indonesian girl.

Man contracts bird flu in Vietnam
Posted: 2-Jun-2007 12:58 hrs

A Vietnamese man has contracted the deadly bird flu virus, becoming the country's second human case since late 2005, a health official said Saturday.

The 19-year-old man tested positive for the H5N1 strain of the virus early this week after being admitted to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Hanoi, a doctor there told AFP.

The doctor, who asked not to be named, said the victim had been admitted on May 19 and was now in a stable condition.

The daily Lao Dong said the patient had been working for a poultry slaughterhouse in the capital before he was taken to the Institute with a high fever and severe respiratory problems.

The director of Hanoi's Bach Mai hospital told the paper two other suspected bird flu victims had been admitted on Thursday and Friday, one of whom died late Friday.

Their samples are being tested in Hanoi, she said.

Last week Vietnam reported that a 30-year-old farmer had been infected with the deadly bird flu virus, the country's first human case since November 2005.

The victim was admitted to Bach Mai hospital in a critical condition but is now improving.

Bird flu has hit 14 of Vietnam's 64 provinces. The government has called for urgent measures to deal with the situation and to raise awareness of the dangers of bird flu.

Between 2003 and November 2005, Vietnam was one of the countries worst hit by bird flu with 42 deaths. The country, however, won international applause for its transparency and effectiveness in curbing the epidemic.

H5N1 has killed almost 200 people and ravaged poultry flocks worldwide since 2003. World Health Organisation experts say a bird flu pandemic among humans would kill millions of people across the globe. — AFP
