Quang Nam controls bird flu, blue ear epidemics

12/05/2008 -- 5:46 PM
Quang Nam (VNA) ? The central province of Quang Nam has announced an end to bird flu and blue ear epidemic in pigs, permitting the resumption of trading, slaughter and transporting of cattle and poultry within the locality.

Avian influenza broke out in the communes of Tam Phu (Tam Ky city) and Tam Xuan II (Nui Thanh district), resulting in the forced culling of more than 6,000 chickens and ducks.

As many as 438 pigs were destroyed following the incidence of blue ear epidemic in Dai Minh, Dai Tan, Dai Phong, Dai Cuong and Dai Thang communes of Dai Loc district.

Quang Nam?s success was attributed to its concerted efforts in guiding farmers to prevent the spread of the diseases, setting up inter-sector forces to monitor the illegal transporting and trading of cattle and poultry and sending out medicines and veterinarians to the affected areas.

Although the infections have been eradicated, the province has recommended local breeders remain cautious by vaccinating cattle herds and poultry flocks on schedule.-Enditem

Bird flu hits one more Vietnamese locality
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-12 12:24:01

HANOI, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Bird flu has recently hit Vietnam's southern Long An province, raising the total number of localities currently affected by the disease to five, according to local newspaper Pioneer Monday.

Specimens from 290 died ducks out of a flock of over 2,000 fowls raised by two households in the two districts of Tan Thanh and Thanh Hoa were tested positive to bird flu virus strain H5N1, the paper quoted the provincial veterinary agency as reporting.

However, the country's Department of Animal Health has yet to confirm the outbreaks in Long An. Now, bird flu is hitting Son La, provinces of Vinh Long and Tra Vinh, and Can Tho City in the southern region, the department said Sunday.

Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.

Nhan Dan - A high risk of bird flu outbreaks has been warned by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
At a meeting of the National Steering Board on Avian Influenza in Hanoi on May 13, Bui Ba Bong, deputy minister of agriculture and rural development, stressed on a possibly high risk of bird flu, especially in the Mekong delta.
This followed outbreaks of bird flu on ducks in five communes in five districts of Long An and Tra Vinh provinces and Can Tho city.
Therefore, localities have been asked to stand ready for any outbreaks of bird flu.
Regarding blue ear disease (porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome), the number of infected pigs has fallen, but the epidemic remained available in 24 communes in nine provinces, including Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Lam Dong, Thua Thien-Hue, Thai Binh, Thai Nguyen, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh.
Due to complicated developments of the epidemic, Mr Bong asked localities and the Veterinary Department to follow the epidemic, preventing it from spreading to the south.
