Local authorities have placed particular emphasis on disease prevention and control efforts. Since the beginning of 2026, the province has recorded two outbreaks of avian influenza and two outbreaks of canine rabies; however, all were addressed promptly and successfully contained within limited areas. Notably, African Swine Fever continues to appear sporadically among small-scale farming households, attributed to the circulation of a recombinant virus strain derived from genotypes I and II.

Annually, the province allocates over 14 billion VND to implement animal disease prevention and control programs. Disease surveillance has been intensified, involving the testing of over 1,000 samples each year to monitor pathogen circulation and assess vaccine efficacy. Concurrently, disinfection and sanitization campaigns for livestock environments are conducted on a regular basis. In 2025 alone, the province distributed 58,000 liters of disinfectant chemicals and 15 tons of chlorine to support disease prevention efforts.

Despite these achievements, Nghe An’s livestock sector continues to face numerous challenges. Small-scale farming currently accounts for a significant 70% of the total livestock population—involving approximately 507,000 households—which poses considerable challenges for disease control, animal transport, and slaughterhouse management. Furthermore, existing production-to-market linkage models remain limited in both scale and sustainability. In the coming period, Nghe An will continue to implement the Livestock Development Strategy for the 2021–2030 period, focusing on developing high-tech farm-based livestock production, establishing disease-free livestock zones, promoting digital transformation in herd management, and expanding production-to-consumption linkages to enhance efficiency and foster the sustainable development of the local livestock sector.
