New virus subtype responsible for hand, foot and mouth disease
Last updated: 5/21/2011 12:00

A more virulent subtype of the Enterovirus 71 virus, which causes hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), is responsible for the recent outbreak in Ho Chi Minh City that has killed nine children, local health authorities said.

Test results of disease samples sent to a Taiwanese laboratory this week showed the EV71 B2 subtype was the reason for the rising number of infected patients in the city over the last few weeks, according to the municipal Health Department.

The virus subtype is to blame for making patients' conditions worse in a shorter period of time.

An estimated 1,200 HFMD cases, including nine fatalities, have been recorded in HCMC this year.

Doctor Truong Huu Khanh of HCMC Children?s Hospital No.1 said other subtypes of the Enterovirus 71 which caused the disease in previous years were more moderate than this year?s subtype.

The hospital has sent more disease samples to Taiwan to test the subtypes of the virus, he added.

HFMD first hit the city in 2003. In 2007, the disease claimed the lives of 16 children...

Hand, foot and mouth disease toll rises to 11 in Vietnam metro
Last updated: 5/25/2011 16:20

Two more children died from hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) this week in Ho Chi Minh, bringing this year?s HFMD death toll in the city to 11, the Health Department announced Tuesday.

Last year, the disease took only one life in the city.

All HFMD fatalities are children below five years old, according to the department.

Doctor Le Truong Giang, the department?s deputy director, said an average 300 HFMD cases were admitted to hospital each week since early May, a 300 percent increase from the same period last year.

?On Monday alone, the HCMC Children?s Hospitals 1 and 2 received a combined 104 children, 15 of whom have serious complications,? he said.

Last week, health authorities concluded that a more virulent subtype of the Enterovirus 71 virus, which causes the disease, is responsible for the recent outbreak in HCMC.

Giang blamed the EV71 B2 subtype and a lack of awareness from the children?s parents for the rising number of infected patients and death toll.

?Most children contracted the virus at home, but our inspection showed many parents did not comply with doctors? instructions to make up the chemical mixture to sterilize the children?s surrounding environment,? he said.

The Health Department has released a warning to parents, whose kids are below 5, to constantly wash the floor, toys, and the children?s hands...

Cases of hand-foot-mouth disease soar

More than 2,100 children in HCM City contracted hand-foot-mouth disease in the past three months, double the number in the same period last year, according to the city's Department of Health.

A total of 70 percent of the patients are under three years old, and 11 children have already died.

Since March the number of cases has increased 2.5 times each month.

The reason for the increase was the appearance of a new virus enterovirus 71 type B2, said Le Truong Giang, Deputy Director of the Health Department.

Hygiene levels in homes and schools are also an issue, he said.

Doctors at the Paediatrics Hospital No 1 said that in the last week of May, more than 100 children were being hospitalised with the disease per day.

In Paediatrics Hospital No 2, 5,450 children were tested for the disease last month, and 795 of them were hospitalised, double the number in April. As many as 284 of the 795 patients were from neighbouring provinces.

At present more than 300 children are receiving treatment at the two hospitals, 15 of whom are in a serious condition and need special care, said Nguyen Van Tho, a doctor from Paediatrics Hospital No 1...

13-year-old dies from hand, foot and mouth disease
Last updated: 6/9/2011 14:00

A 13-year-old boy died from hand, foot and mouth disease last weekend, becoming the 12th HFMD fatality in Ho Chi Minh City this year.

The boy fell sick several days prior to his death and was admitted to hospital when his conditions worsened, according to HCMC Children?s Hospital 2.

His parents thought he just caught the normal flu and it was rather late when they brought him to hospital. The boy had serious complications, which led to his death.

He is a rare case because the HFMD usually attacks children under five, doctors said.

Doctor Nguyen Dac Tho of HCMC Preventive Health Center said parents should beware if their children had fever lasting more than two days.

?Even when the children are aged more than five, they should be taken to hospital for examination and treatment,? Tho said.

The city has reported more than 3,000 HFMD cases, including 12 fatalities, this year.

In May alone, a record 1,433 cases were reported.

Dong Nai reports seven dead from hand, foot and mouth disease
Last updated: 6/8/2011 14:10

A two-year-old boy in the southern province of Dong Nai died from hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) on Tuesday, bringing the HFMD fatalities in the province to seven this year.

Nguyen Minh Vao of Long Thanh District was admitted to hospital a day earlier with high fever and respiratory disorder.

Doctor Nguyen Le Da Ha of Dong Nai Children?s Hospital said the boy contracted the HFMD two days before being taken to hospital and later had complications.

The hospital is providing treatment to around 210 HFMD patients.

Ha advised families of HFMD-infected children to bring them to the hospital quickly because youth patients can have serious complications.

Apart from Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City has so far reported 11 deaths from HFMD and Quang Ngai Province has reported three deaths.

EV71 cause of HFMD: Pasteur Institute

The Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed on June 9 that the deadly Enterovirus 71 (EV71) of sub-genotype C4 caused the recent outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD).

The southern provinces have reported 7,000 cases of HFMD in children, including 24 deaths this year, while last year the disease claimed six lives. Ho Chi Minh City alone reported 27,000 young children suffering from the disease, with 13 reported deaths.

Pasteur institute has conducted tests on 174 HFMD patients in Children Hospital No.1, 2 in HCMC and the southern provinces of Dong Thap, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Tien Giang and Long An.

Test results showed that out of 174 cases, 43 were EV71 cases. Five children treated positive for EV71 and succumbed to the disease. Eight toddlers tested positive for EV71 of sub-genotype C4 and two died later.

The Children Hospital No.1 had sent disease samples to a Taiwanese laboratory 15 days ago for testing. Test results showed the EV71 B2 subtype, appearing in the country for the first time, was to blame for worsening patients? condition.

The death of a 13-year-old boy from hand-foot-mouth disease is a rare case as HFMD usually attacks children under five.

With the disease becoming more unpredictable, the Preventive Health Department of the Ministry of Health, worked with the Pasteur Institute and the Department of Health in HCMC to implement measures to reduce fatality rates.

The Department of Health has set up six inspection teams and a scientific council to review treatment procedures. The health sector will cooperate with educational facilities to control the spread of the disease.

The disease was first spotted in 2004 in the city, when it claimed 24 lives. Twenty-one more died when it returned in 2007. The third endemic is back with a more virulent subtype of Enterovirus 71.
