Bird flu kills Vietnamese woman

HANOI (Reuters) - Bird flu has killed a woman teacher in northern Vietnam, the fourth death from the H5N1 virus this year, state-run Voice of Vietnam radio reported on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old woman died on Monday at a Hanoi hospital after falling sick as she ate chicken in her home province of Phu Tho, the radio quoted the Health Ministry as saying.

In communist-run Vietnam, official announcements are often made in state-run media.

Tests performed at a Vietnamese laboratory confirmed the woman had the H5N1 virus, the report said. The death has not been confirmed by the World Health Organisation (See Factbox).

The woman's death is the fourth out of five people infected by bird flu so far this year in Vietnam after an extended cold spell in northern provinces. The virus is usually most active in colder weather.

A 7-year-old child from the northern province of Hai Duong who has been confirmed as infected by the H5N1 virus remained under treatment at a pediatric hospital in Hanoi, doctors said.

Excluding the death on Monday, bird flu has killed 232 people among the 366 known cases globally, among them 50 deaths in Vietnam, the WHO said.

HANOI - A 23-year-old woman from northern Vietnam has died of bird flu, the health ministry said Tuesday, the country's fourth such death since the start of the year.
It brings Vietnam's total number of deaths from avian influenza to 51.
Nguyen Huy Nga, the director of the health ministry's preventive medicine department, said the woman, a teacher, died Monday after testing positive for the H5N1 virus two days earlier.
Northern Vietnam has recently been in the grip of a cold snap that brought rare ice and snow to mountaintops, killing crops and livestock and increasing the risk of flu and other respiratory diseases.
The H5N1 bird flu virus mainly kills animals, but scientists fear it could mutate to easily jump from human to human, sparking a global pandemic.
The World Health Organization has so far confirmed 366 human cases of H5N1 bird flu worldwide, of which 232 people have died, according to its website, which does not include Vietnam's latest reported fatality.:tiphat:

The above translation describes another fatal H5N1 case in northern Vietnam (see satellite map). This is the fourth fatality this year and follows the confirmed fatality in Guangdong Province in southern China. It is unclear if the patient above was among the hospitalized suspect patients mentioned earlier, but the jump in fatal cases in northern Vietnam and southern China raise concerns that the H5N1 in circulation is infecting patients more efficiently.

It is likely that the recent infections in patients, poultry, and wild birds in the area are clade 2.2.3, but sequence data on isolates from these recent outbreaks would be useful.

Bid flu could strike anywhere in the country, the ministry?s Veterinary Department warned recently, especially in the Red River and Mekong Deltas.

The severe cold and drizzle in the north, the department said, were only adding to the risk.

Four people have already died from the H5N1 virus in Vietnam this year, two from Hai Duong Province and one each from Ninh Binh and Tuyen Quang.

A fifth case is yet to be confirmed. The death of a man in the coastal province of Bac Lieu last Tuesday could well be from H5N1 Type A too.

Veterinary Department chief Bui Quang Anh reports that, on the same day, many dead ducks had been found in Uong Bi, a town in the northern province of Quang Ninh. Samples from the ducks are being tested.

Earlier, between February 12 and 14, bird flu was detected in the border town of Mong Cai and Dong Trieu District, both in Quang Ninh province.

On February 11, over 700 ill ducks were found in Tan Lap ward, Thai Nguyen, a city that had been free of bird flu for nearly three weeks. It took until February 19 for the Veterinary Department to finish testing the ducks and confirm that they were positive for bird flu.

BEIJING, Feb 26 (Reuters) - China has announced a bird flu outbreak among poultry in its unusually cold south, a day after two women, one in China and one in neighbouring Vietnam, died of the virus.
The poultry outbreak, first noticed on Feb. 17 in Zunyi in the southwestern province of Guizhou, had killed nearly 4,000 birds and triggered the culling of more than 238,000, Xinhua news agency said late on Monday, citing the Ministry of Agriculture.
China has reported four outbreaks of the disease in poultry since December, when average temperatures across the country hit their lowest in decades. Bird flu tends to be more active in the cold.
Experts fear the H5N1 strain could mutate or combine with the highly contagious seasonal influenza virus and spark a pandemic. With the world's biggest poultry population and hundreds of millions of farmers raising birds in their backyards, China is seen as crucial in the global fight against the disease.
China has reported three confirmed human deaths from bird flu this year, the most recent in the southern province of Guangdong, neighbouring Hong Kong.
The woman, a 44-year-old migrant worker, probably contracted the H5N1 virus from sick poultry she kept in her backyard, Hong Kong government health officials said.
The spate of cases is a concern for a country that has the world's biggest poultry population, many of them backyard birds roaming free. China has struggled to combat the virus with mass inoculations for birds and an education campaign for those who handle them.

The Ministry of Health in Viet Nam has confirmed a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. The case has been confirmed by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE).
The case is a 23 -year old female from Cam Khe district, Phu Tho province. She developed symptoms on 14 February was hospitalized on 19 February and died on 25 February. The case had contact with sick and dead poultry prior to her illness.
Of the 105 cases confirmed to date in Vietnam, 51 have been fatal.

HANOI, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's National Institute of Infectious and Tropical Diseases is treating two people from northern Hung Yen and Thai Nguyen provinces, who have developed bird flu symptoms, according to local newspaper Pioneer on Wednesday.
Specimens from a 23-year-old person from Hung Yen and a 48-year-old person from Thai Nguyen, who currently need respiratory assistance because their lungs have been severely damaged, are being tested for bird flu virus strain H5N1, the newspaper quoted Nguyen Hong Ha, vice director of the institute in Hanoi, as saying.
Initial investigation has shown that the two patients had contacted with fowls before exhibiting bird flu symptoms. To date, Vietnam has confirmed a total of 105 human cases of bird flu infections, including 51 fatalities, in 35 cities and provinces since bird flu started to hit the country in December 2003. Vietnam currently has eight localities having poultry being hit by bird flu: Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Nam Dinh, Tuyen Quang and Ninh Binh in the northern region, and Long An and Vinh Long in the southern region, the country's Department of Animal Health said Feb. 26.

This year has seen an unexpected turn by the disease as it has caused more casualties and infected more humans even though the number of bird flu-infected areas is reported to be fewer than last year, he added.

Cool weather combined with health officials? poor management and control over vaccination, poultry trade and transportation are said to be the main factors behind the disease?s reemergence.

Mr Bong said the task of preventing bird flu should be given utmost priority. The officials responsible should ramp up their inspection of poultry sales and slaughter, and free-roaming ducks, and make sure that poultry flocks across the nation are properly vaccinated against bird flu.

Officials, poultry farmers and the general public must report cases of infected fowls as soon as possible so that the affected flocks can be culled without delay. No dead fowl is allowed to be sold or eaten under any circumstance, Mr Bong stressed.

According to the Animal Health Department, most of the country?s poultry flocks have been vaccinated but they were only given one shot instead of the two shots they were meant to get. The lack of diligence by health officials may lead to another outbreak of bird flu.

In related news, the Nha Trang Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals has produced three batches of 5,500 doses of the Fluvac influenza vaccine A/H5N1 for humans.

After successfully testing the vaccine on mice, hamsters and cocks, the institute is planning to test it on people.

HANOI, Vietnam - Bird flu killed a woman from northern Vietnam in the country's 51st fatality from the disease and health officials fretted Tuesday that the virus would spread further.

The 23-year-old teacher from Phu Tho province, some 80 kilometres northwest of Hanoi, died in a Hanoi hospital Monday morning, said Nguyen Huy Nga, director of the Health Ministry's Preventive Medicine Department.

Test results showed she was infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus. It was the country's 51st bird flu death reported since the virus began raging across Asia in late 2003 and the 233rd death reported globally.

"We still report bird flu outbreaks among poultry," Nga said Tuesday.

"The risk of bird flu infection among people remains very high and we expect more human cases."

The woman developed bird flu symptoms Feb.14 and died Monday after being treated at the National Tropical Disease Hospital for four days, Nga said.

Nguyen Duc Mao, director of Phu Tho's Preventive Medicine Bureau, said health authorities are still unclear how the woman was infected.

"A few hundred chickens died in the school neighbourhood but they tested negative for the bird flu virus," Mao said.

"We still don't know how she was infected."

Bird flu remains hard for people to catch but health experts worry the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily among humans, sparking a pandemic. So far, most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.

At least 232 people have died worldwide from the virus, the World Health Organization said. Vietnam's latest bird flu death was not included in the WHO's tally.

Vietnam runs short on Tamiflu as avian influenza spreads


The stock of Tamiflu at Vietnam?s leading institute for treating bird flu is dated while the epidemic is growing increasingly out-of-control, the institute?s deputy director said at a meeting Wednesday.


Nguyen Hong Ha from the National Institute of Infectious and Tropical Diseases said the stock, which had been donated by Taiwan in 2005, was expired not only at the institute but also in several provinces such as Hai Duong and Phu Tho.

Northern provinces of Hai Duong and Phu Tho where bird flu cases have been reported recently are also running low on the medicine which serves as the sole effective treatment for human cases of avian influenza.

The Ministry of Health said it was searching for new supplies and would use medicine produced by Vietnam (Osetavimin) as a temporary replacement in the interim.

Hien said a shortage of Tamiflu would be disastrous for Vietnam, adding that ?severe bird flu outbreaks are occurring more often and an increasing amount of deaths are reported from infected people.?

The total number of H5N1 human casualties in Vietnam, with 105 cases in all, is high among the list of affected countries in the world.

The Central Hygiene Epidemic Institute reported 48 cases of acute pneumonia suspected of stemming from avian influenza this year, including four deaths, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus in Vietnam to 51 since 2003 ? the second highest figure after Indonesia.

Since June of 2007 there have been nine confirmed human H5N1 cases, all of whom have died. I did not check very thoroughly, but I think most of these individuals were not publically reported as H5N1 until after their deaths. This suggests the possibility that individuals who show symptoms of "acute pneumonia", and survive, are not tested for H5N1, or at least the results are not made public.
