HFMD kills five children in Quang Ngai, Dong Nai

Five children have died of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in the past two weeks in the central province of Quang Ngai and the southern province of Dong Nai.

Nguyen Tan Phu, chief of the Children?s division of the General Hospital in Quang Ngai province, announced that two toddlers had died of the disease in the past two weeks.

Until now, 200 children have contracted the disease in the province. Since mid May, the hospital has received an average of 20 babies suffering from hand-foot-mouth disease each day.

Outbreak of the disease in Quang Ngai occurred in the beginning of May in children less than three years of age, caused by the recent unpredictable weather.

Since the last two weeks, the disease has spread rapidly in Quang Ngai, leading to an increasing number of children being hospitalized, resulting in a shortage of beds. All serious cases were rushed to the central hospital in Da Nang.

Meanwhile, three kids died in the Children?s Hospital in the southern province of Dong Nai between May 28-30, according to Dr. Nguyen Le da Ha, hospital director. Like previous years, May is the peak season for the disease.

This year, the hospital received over 30 cases a day. On May 31 alone, 98 children were hospitalized. The hospital reported the death of four toddlers due to HFMD...

A 26-month-old boy died from hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in the central province of Quang Ngai on Saturday, bringing the province?s HFMD death toll to five.

Pham Thien Trung of Tu Nghia District was admitted to the hospital with high fever, convulsions and difficult breathing. He succumbed to the disease after four days of treatment.

Quang Ngai reported around 1,500 HFMD cases, including five fatalities, so far this year.

The disease has hit 125 communes and towns in 13 of 14 districts, with most patients being aged between one and three years old.

The Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is responsible for the increasing number of HFMD cases in Quang Tri since mid-May.

Coxsackie A virus, the primary cause of the disease, is more prevalent among children during the summer and autumn months.

Typical symptoms include fever and sore throat accompanied by a rash, which may disappear in five to seven days with no complications.

However, EV71 could produce complications such as meningitis and heart failure, and eventually lead to death, according to local doctors.

Doctors recommend frequent hand washing, good hygiene and providing sanitary conditions in children's living space to prevent the disease, as well as a doctors visit should symptoms appear and persist.

Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease
(HFMD) continue to be reported in 49
provinces in Viet Nam. Updated as of 1
August, about 25,918 cases and 74 deaths
have been reported to the Ministry of Health.
Children under five years of age are the most
vulnerable. Big cities are among the most
affected areas and the Ministry of Health is
leading public health interventions to reduce
infection and deaths.
As a member of the National Steering
Committee on Infectious Diseases and
Pandemics, Viet Nam Red Cross has
participated in regular coordination meetings
with the Ministry of Health to keep a close
watch on the situation. In July, guidance to
reduce risks of HFMD was provided by Viet
Nam Red Cross to members, staff and
volunteers in all 63 provinces. At the provincial,
district and commune levels, Red Cross staff
and volunteers have also helped strengthen health education to the general public while engaging with
organizations in health and other related sectors in efforts to limit the spread and impact of HFMD.

The virus is easily spread from coughing and sneezing and affects mostly children. The first suggestion of FMD virus infection in humans was reported by Valentini in Germany, in 1695. In 1834, a surgeon named Hertwig, are deliberately infected by drinking milk from cows. The majority of cases in the medical literature, laboratory diagnosis, were identified in Europe. In fact, there are only about 40 confirmed cases in the laboratory by virus isolation and identification or detection of serum antibodies in patients recovered from the infection, being the type "O" of the FMD virus which has been isolated from most humans, so that what is happening in Vietnam is a very special and striking.
