HCMC leader wants state apparatus mobilized against swine flu

The entire government machinery must be mobilized to take drastic action to combat the A/H1N1 influenza, standing deputy chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People?s Committee, Nguyen Thanh Tai, said at a meeting held by the steering board for the prevention of the epidemic on June 16.

The city must implement these measures but without causing panic among people, he said.

He ordered the city?s Department of Health to instruct private medical establishments to set up quarantine wards and mobile medical teams to treat people infected by swine flu and increase public awareness.

The department?s head, Dr. Nguyen Van Chau, feared a spread of the illness since four people have contracted the disease from other people.

Huynh Huu Loi, head of the city Animal Health Department, said people flying into the city should stay in hotels around Tan Son Nhat International Airport for a few days that they can be monitored for the flu.
