HCM City, South face malaria threat
23/07/2008 (GMT+7)
The HCM City Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology said a malaria epidemic could break out any time in the southern region, especially in HCM City, warning preventive measures by the health care system have proved inadequate.
By May an estimated 23,000 cases of malaria, seven of them fatal, were reported, mostly in Dac Nong, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Soc Trang, An Giang, and Bac Lieu provinces.
Viet Nam is among the countries facing a high risk of malaria, with the malarial parasite becoming resistant to the drugs currently available on the market.
The Ministry of Health is prescribing a new course of treatment and new drugs.
