HANOI, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Bird flu may have killed a 32-year-old Vietnamese man in a northern province where the virus has been found in poultry, state-run media and a government report said on Tuesday.
The man died at a Hanoi hospital of pneumonia earlier this month, two days after he had been taken in from Tuyen Quang province, the hospital's deputy director Nguyen Hong Ha was quoted by the online VTC News newspaper (www.vtc.vn) as saying.
The man fell ill on Jan. 16 after eating chicken which had died of unknown cause. Dead chicken and white-winged ducks were also found near his house, the newspaper quoted a relative as saying.
Vietnamese doctors were testing to see if the man had been infected by the H5N1 virus.
The H5N1 virus remains mainly a virus of birds, but experts fear it could mutate into a form easily transmitted from person to person and sweep the world, killing millions.
In a separate report, the Animal Health Department said tests have confirmed that bird flu has infected poultry in Tuyen Quang province.
It said chickens and white-winged ducks died at a farm in the province early this month and health officials took samples from 11 birds on Jan 17. for bird flu tests. They found three of the 11 samples carried the H5N1 virus, the department said.
The finding meant Tuyen Quang joined the northern province of Thai Nguyen and the southern province of Tra Vinh in the government's bird flu watchlist which reported the last outbreak among poultry less than 21 days ago.
Vietnam reported its latest human death from bird flu last month when the virus killed a four-year-old boy.
The H5N1 virus has killed five out of the eight Vietnamese who have caught it last year, taking the country's death toll since late 2003 to 47.
Globally, the H5N1 virus has killed 219 people out of 351 known cases and most of the deaths are in Indonesia, followed by Vietnam, World Health Organisation figures show. Hundreds of millions of birds have died or been slaughtered. (Reporting by Ho Binh Minh)

Bird flu spreads in central Vietnam

Ducks continue to die in Hong Thuy Commune in Quang Binh Province, Pham Hong Son, head of the provincial Animal Health Department, confirmed Friday.

About 465 ducks have died since the initial outbreak on January 23 in the central province, of which 15 were injected with the first H5N1 vaccine six days ago.

After the outbreak, the local administration culled 5,300 ducks and made plans to control the epidemic.

The administration of the northern Thai Nguyen Province officially reported on Wednesday that bird flu broke out in the area.

It hit 110 ducks and 4,000 chickens.

The chickens had been inoculated with the H5N1 vaccine on January 21.

Four provinces have suffered from the recurrence of bird flu since late December - Quang Binh, Thai Nguyen, Tra Vinh and Tuyen Quang.

Bird flu has killed 48 people in Vietnam since 2003.

Vietnam alert to bird flu outbreaks among fowls, humans

By Bui Minh Long HANOI, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- With three provinces hit by bird flu now, Vietnam is on high alert to the possible outbreaks of the disease among both poultry and humans, according to a local veterinary agency on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged cities and provinces nationwide to maintain close surveillance on poultry farms and transport, especially cross-border transport of live fowls, their fresh organs and eggs, during the approaching Lunar New Year Festival which starts on Feb. 6, its Department of Animal Health said.
Bird flu case were found in two northern provinces of Thai Nguyen and Tuyen Quang and the central province of Quang Binh.
Cao Duc Phat, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and chairman of Vietnam's Anti-Bird flu Steering Committee, in late January asked sectors and localities nationwide to assign officials and specialists to go to grassroots levels to timely detect potential bird flu outbreaks right at households, and intensify vaccination against bird flu viruses among fowls.
Vietnam will import additional 500 million doses of bird flu vaccines for poultry nationwide this year, the department said.
The country, which imports bird flu vaccines for fowls mainly from China and the Netherlands, plans to mass produce the vaccines in the coming time, according to sources from some local animal health institutes.
The agriculture minister asked relevant state cadres and farmers to frequently disinfect poultry farms, egg incubators, slaughterhouses and wholesale markets, because cold weather conditions would help the growth of bird flu viruses, including the deadly strain H5N1.
He also urged relevant forces to strengthen animal quarantine and management over cross-border transport of fowls and related products.
Local media should disseminate information about bird flu preventive measures and residents are advised not to slaughter and eat sick or dead poultry, dishes made from fresh fowl blood, and undercooked eggs, he added.
After detecting the latest human bird flu case in mid-January, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health established 69 mobile anti-bird flu teams in all 64 cities and provinces, tasked to timely detect suspected cases, and provide relevant bird flu medicines and protective gears to the localities.
The Health Ministry confirmed that the latest case was a 32-year-old ethnic man from northern Tuyen Quang who died on Jan. 18.Before showing bird flu symptoms, he slaughtered and ate dead fowls raised by his family for meal.
After detecting no human cases of bird flu infections for nearly four months, the ministry confirmed that a four-year-old boy from northern Son La province died from bird flu on Dec. 16, 2007.
Vietnam has confirmed a total of 102 human cases of bird flu infections, including 48 fatalities, in 34 cities and provinces since the disease first struck the country in December 2003.
According to a report dated Feb. 1 of the World Health Organization, there has been so far a total of 357 human cases of bird flu infections, including 225 deaths, in 14 countries, mainly in Asia. Indonesia topped of the list with 124 cases and 102 fatalities, followed by Vietnam.

?The entire state machinery must be mobilized and drastic actions taken to fight avian influenza. Furthermore, those in charge of controlling bird flu must keep a close watch on vaccination for free-roaming chickens?, the dispatch read.
It stressed the importance of raising public awareness on the risks and cautioned people against buying poultry of unclear origins.
The ministry also asked Medical Departments and Preventative Medical Centers in those provinces to increase inspection activities on poultry sales and slaughtering.
A telephone hotline 04-8685104 has been set up to have timely action against the epidemic.
Though bird flu rarely infects people, Viet Nam has seen four human fatalities since the beginning of this year.
Deputy Director of Ha Noi-based National Contagious and Tropical Diseases Hospital Nguyen Hong Ha said on February 17 that three bird flu victims have been transferred to central medical clinics in critical condition lately because local doctors did not diagnose the disease soon enough.
A man from the northern Hai Duong province who died on February 13 was admitted to central hospital after he had contracted the disease for six days while local doctors failed to prescribe Tamiflu, a necessary drug in this case.
It resulted in his kidney, liver and two lungs being damaged upon arrival at the central hospital.
Meanwhile, the National Preventative Health Department assured there is as yet no evidence of the bird flu virus mutating into a form that can be transmitted from humans to humans. :tiphat:

HANOI, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Dead poultry have been found in rivers and streams in northern Vietnam, a sign of a possible new bird flu outbreak during a prolonged cold spell, officials said on Tuesday.
The Agriculture Ministry said in a report that callers to an animal health department hotline reported large numbers of dead birds in five provinces, but was not specific.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu killed three men in northern Vietnam between Jan. 18 and Feb. 14 during a record-long cold spell. The H5N1 virus seems to thrive best in cool temperatures.
"In recent days the Animal Health Department has received many reports about poultry dying in large numbers in provinces," the Agriculture Ministry-run department said in a report on its Web site (www.dah.gov.vn).
"A bird flu outbreak is forecast to emerge in the northern region when cold days extend," it said.
The department, in a separate report, said that bird flu has killed nearly 2,500 ducks and chickens in the northern provinces of Hai Duong, Nam Dinh and Tuyen Quang, bringing to seven the provinces on the government's bird flu watchlist.
Animal health workers have slaughtered the remaining 1,900 birds at the three infected farms.
Doctors confirmed at the weekend that a 7-year-old child from the northern province of Hai Duong had the virus. The child has been under treatment in Hanoi along with several suspected cases.
Bird flu has killed 50 people in Vietnam out of 106 infected cases since late 2003, the Health Ministry said.
Officials said they have not been able to control poultry smuggling from northern neighbour China, which reported its latest human death on Monday, bringing its toll to 18.
H5N1 remains mainly a virus of birds, but experts fear it could mutate into a form easily transmitted from person to person and sweep the world, possibly killing millions.
The virus is known to have killed 227 people globally since late 2003, according to the World Health Organisation, not including the latest death in China and two cases in Indonesia in recent days. (Reporting by Ho Binh Minh; Editing by Grant McCool and David Fogarty)

3 more provinces in Vietnam report bird flu outbreaks

HANOI, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Outbreaks of bird flu among fowls were detected from Feb. 16-18 Vietnam's northern provinces, raising the total number of its localities hit by the disease to seven, local newspaper New Hanoi reported Wednesday.

Over the past few days, bird flu has killed 90 fowls in Tuyen Quang province's Ham Yen district, nearly 1,800 in Nam Dinh province's Vu Ban district, and 640 in Hai Duong province's Thanh Mien district.

Currently seven localities were hit by bird flu: Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Nam Dinh and Tuyen Quang in the northern region, central Quang Binh province, and northern Long An province, according to the Department of Animal Health under the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The department is urging localities nationwide to strengthen anti-bird flu activities, and planning to import more bird flu vaccines from China to keep on vaccinating poultry, the newspaper said.

Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.

Provincial animal health departments have been requested to review their previous anti-epidemic procedures and to implement preventative procedures in the combat against bird flu.

Local departments of Animal Health must ensure a rapid response when dealing with the disease.
Procedures should include quarantine of the affected areas, the setting up of 24 hour response teams, an emergency telephone service to receive information, regular sterilization of areas previously affected, the issuing of hygiene guidelines to breeders and the provision of supplementary vaccines for unvaccinated and newly-born waterfowl.
The Animal Health Department, which is under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has also confirmed bird flu has re-occurred in the three northern provinces of Hai Duong, Nam Dinh and Tuyen Quang.
The new outbreak was found in a flock of 800 chickens on a farmer in Thang Mien District of Hai Duong, killing 640 chickens. The fatal virus also killed 1,765 livestock in Nam Dinh and 90 birds in Tuyen Quang.
Bird flu has been confirmed in seven provinces, namely Thai Nguyen, Hai Duong, Nam Dinh, Tuyen Quang and Quang Ninh in the north, Quang Binh in the central region and Long An in the south.

High risk of bird flu reoccurs in Central and Central Highland regions

The Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a meeting in central Quang Ngai province on February 29 to implement bird flu preventive work in 2008 in central and central highland regions.

Bui Quang Anh, head of the Veterinary Department said that so far this year 15 bird flu outbreaks have occurred in nine provinces with a total number of killed and destroyed birds of 21,863.

Three out of five people have died of flu type A H5N1.

Outbreaks are mainly in northern provinces while central and central highland regions are in high risk of facing a bird flu reoccurrence.

At the meeting, representatives from localities and the veterinary department reviewed experiences in bird flu preventative work and devised preventive measures for the next period.

Main tasks include vaccinating new birds, strengthening quarantine, controlling transportation, trade, slaughtering and consuming poultry products, supervising each household for early detection and containing the spread of the disease and establishing a hot line to update information about the disease.

In addition, localities must carry out regular sterilisation, apply safe measures in husbandry, check hatching and raising units and the strengthening of promulgation on preventive measures with local people.

Bird flu outbreaks in central and southern provinces
bird%20flu%20064-08.jpg
Three bird flu outbreaks were reported Tuesday in central and southern Vietnam, officials said, adding that around 1,300 farm-housed fowl were culled. The southern province of Vinh Long reported two more bird flu outbreaks after a southern veterinary center verified that fowl there had tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

There have now been a total of three outbreaks around the province in just seven days including one last Tuesday in which over 1,000 farm chickens were destroyed.

The farm’s owner was also suspected of contracting bird flu after reporting a fever, difficutly breathing and a cough. Ho Chi Minh City’s Pasteur Institute however, conducted testing and determined the patient had not contracted the H5N1 virus.

The central province of Quang Nam also destroyed 287 ducks found to have been exposed to bird flu on a farm in Hoi An City last Saturday.
On Sunday, Quang Nam destroyed another 2,000 fowl on a farm where a suspiciously large number of birds had died. No testing has yet been performed to determine if the birds were actually exposed to the virus.

The bird flu epidemic has hit 10 provinces so far this year, half of which were northern provinces including Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Nam, and Thai Nguyen. Southern provinces included Tra Vinh, Long An and Vinh Long. The two central provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Nam were also hit.

H5N1 has killed four people in Vietnam this year, bringing the total number of deaths caused by the virus to 51 in Vietnam since 2003.
Outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza began in Southeast Asia in mid-2003 and have now killed at least 228 people worldwide.

HA NOI ? The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched a month-long campaign to disinfect the environment throughout the country in a bid to prevent bird flu from spreading.
Deputy Minister Bui Ba Bong said yesterday that the campaign, which started on Monday, was necessary in every single locality, especially at poultry farms, waterfowl hatching centres, poultry slaughtering houses and markets.
He said the campaign was part of an urgent measure against bird flu as the epidemic situation in Viet Nam was more serious than last year.
"There was no bird flu this month last year," he said, "the disease only returned last May."
Bong said since the start of this year, 25 outbreaks were reported which resulted in the death of four humans and more than 26,000 birds.
Last year about 30 outbreaks were reported which caused five human deaths and more than 200,000 birds.
"And it?s important to note that the first vaccination round of the year cannot start this month," he said.
Bong earlier warned of a gap in vaccination. The last vaccinations, the second for 2007, were done between September and December while one dose protects a chicken for five to six months and a duck for only four months.
The Animal Health Department reported that Viet Nam now had only 23 million H5N1 vaccine doses in stock whereas about 250,000 million doses were needed for a full round.
These vaccines would be imported from China.
The current list of bird flu-stricken areas includes nine provinces, namely Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Nam Dinh, Tuyen Quang, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Nam and Vinh Long.
All of these provinces, except for southern Vinh Long Province are in the north. ? VNS

Minister forecasts massive bird flu outbreak in May

Bird flu epidemic may break out in many provinces nationwide this May, an animal health official warned at a Tuesday meeting in Hanoi.

Head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development?s Animal Health Department Bui Quang Anh said the deadly strain of H5N1 bird flu virus still persisted in many provinces nationwide.

Lax control over trade and transportation of poultry in many provinces threatens to spark bird flu recurrence.

The risks will increase as the weather gets warmer due to resumption of fowl farming.

The bird flu epidemic has hit 10 provinces so far this year, half of which are northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Nam, and Thai Nguyen.

Southern provinces affected include Tra Vinh, Long An and Vinh Long, along with the two central provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Nam.

H5N1 has killed four people in Vietnam this year, bringing the total number of deaths caused by the virus to 51 in the country since 2003.

Bird flu resurfaces in Vietnam's capital after a year

</TD></TR><TR><TD><!-- Story-MediaBoxPosition: 0 empty -->HANOI, Vietnam (AP) -- Vietnamese officials said Friday that bird flu has made a comeback in Vietnam's capital after being held at bay for more than a year, and chided farmers for negligence in fighting the virus.
Bird flu struck a farm in the suburban Soc Son district of Hanoi, killing more than 2,000 unvaccinated ducks, chickens and geese. Test results showed they were infected with the dangerous H5N1 virus, the Department of Animal Health reported on its Web site Friday.
Authorities disinfected and slaughtered the remaining 1,500 birds on the farm, it said.
Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture has asked provinces to intensify efforts to prevent the virus from spreading nationwide.
"Farmers are so negligent now. We have had to issue warnings for better preparations for a possible pandemic, as the virus usually flares up in this cold weather," said Van Dang Ky, an official at the ministry.
Nine provinces which have reported outbreaks over past weeks remain on the bird flu watchlist, Ky said.
The recent wave of outbreaks has killed or led to the slaughter of more than 30,000 birds, according to the ministry.
Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily among humans, sparking a pandemic. So far, most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.
At least 235 people have died worldwide from the virus, according to the World Health Organization. In Vietnam it has killed 51 people, with four deaths reported this year.
