(DN)- In the past week, the number of patients coming to the hospital for examination and treatment of respiratory diseases has increased, including children and adults. Many families have both parents and children sick.

Deputy Director of Dong Nai Children's Hospital Nguyen Trong Nghia said that respiratory diseases such as rhinitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia... often appear when the weather changes, creating favorable conditions for viruses and bacteria to develop.

Respiratory diseases are transmitted through the air, especially easily spread in collective environments such as schools, making children susceptible to disease. At some schools, according to information from homeroom teachers, each day there are 1-3 children absent from school due to respiratory diseases. Some of them are absent for a whole week.

Symptoms of respiratory diseases include: fever, cough, runny nose, cough with phlegm, stuffy nose, runny nose. Children under 2 months old, children with congenital diseases (congenital heart disease, congenital lung disease), neuromuscular diseases, severe malnutrition, congenital immunodeficiency, chromosomal abnormalities due to Down syndrome... are at risk of severe respiratory diseases. When seeing the above signs in children, parents need to take them to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment to avoid serious complications requiring hospitalization.

Signs that respiratory diseases are getting worse include: increasing cough, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, high fever that does not go down, chest retraction, flaring nostrils, groaning, poor feeding or inability to drink, cyanosis. These cases must be hospitalized immediately for treatment. Severe cases require mechanical ventilation and active treatment.

To prevent and limit the increase in respiratory diseases, schools, nurseries, and kindergartens need to regularly clean classrooms and keep them airy; closely monitor students' health, detect early cases of fever, cough, and runny nose to promptly notify medical facilities.

Families and schools need to instruct children to wash their hands regularly with soap and clean water to help reduce the risk of infection with respiratory infectious diseases. Vaccinate children fully and on schedule. Supplement nutrition through food and fruit juice to ensure children's health.

If children have respiratory diseases, they should stay home from school for treatment to avoid infecting other children in class. When going out, they should wear a mask to limit the spread of infection.
