Re: Vietnam - Dien Bien province, 23 year old died of H5N1 + other dead suspected patients with respiratory failure

I asked a Vietnamese-American friend to translate the Vietnamese news article that Commonground quoted above in post 31 (referring back to post 23, posted on Dec 14). My friend passed on the task to her father who grew up in Vietnam and has lived in the States for many years. He provided the following translation (thank-you both!):

The death of V? Văn Minh from 14th Pom Lot team, Sam Mứn commune, Điện Bi?n due to influenza A/H5N1 on November 30 after eating a dish of raw duck blood makes a headline story. Test results after the sudden death of Minh?s cousin (who also had the same pathological symptons) were A/H5N1 positive, confirmed by the Central Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute. The sample birds from two families of patients dying from acute respiratory failure suspected of influenza A/H5N1: Lường Văn Chựa, from P?nh mountain village, Thanh Lu?ng commune, and Lường Thi Lau, from Xa Cu?ng mountain village, Pa Thơm commune, are also A/H5N1 positive. Test results led team of health workers from central to local levels raised concerns about the mating ability between A/H1N1 and A/H5N1 viruses and such risk is very high.

Original from Commonground's post:

Thank you everyone.

So there are 2 H5N1 positive confirmed persons who had exposure to H5N1 infected poultry. In addition there are apparently others who died of acute respiratory illness who also were exposed to H5N1 positive poultry.

Tiết canh (Tiet canh) is raw blood soup

Tiết canh, or 'raw blood soup,' is a common sight throughout Vietnam. Rich in protein, its flavor is slightly metallic and is designed to be consumed with beer. The popularity of tiết canh, however, began to wane with the spread of the bird flu epidemic throughout Asia.. In the north of the country, this pudding is eaten for breakfast, particularly by country people, as an alternative to the soup known as pho. Tiết canh is made from raw blood, usually duck, and sprinkled with crushed peanuts. The government of Vietnam has been considering banning the sale of tiết canh due to the danger of the transmission of the H5N1 avian influenza virus from birds to humans.

How to make Tiết canh
  1. Obtain fresh, healthy livestock. Pigs (in order to make tiết canh heo) and ducks (for tiết canh vit) are the most common choices.
  2. Slit the animal's throat and drain the blood into a cup or bowl.
  3. Place cups into a freezer and let them sit for twenty-four hours
  4. Remove the bowls and let the blood thaw.
  5. For garnish, add chopped peanuts to the top of your semi-congealed meal
  6. Drink with alcohol.

So that's odd. The previous article seemed to indicate that the cousin was a confirmed fatal case as well (and had contact with the poultry too), but I this article indicates there are no further confirmed cases.

I would think we would have heard more by now if there was a second confirmed case more than two days ago. Odd. Perhaps the article two days ago misreported the situation.

I posted this article because it spoke of 18 other subjects.
I do not find it odd.
I am still waiting for confirmation from two in Egypt. ;)

I believe (and hope) those 18 had contact with the suspected human patients (and not the infected poultry) and are being held in isolation as a precaution. I do not think they they are ill.

Re: Vietnam - Dien Bien province, 2 confirmed human deaths from H5N1 + other suspicious deaths due to acute respiratory illness - exposure to H5N1 positive poultry

I'm not sure the second case is confirmed - this article release today says only one is confirmed, and four other suspect cases tested negative (and this one hasn't been translated).

http://english.vietnamnet.vn/social/200912/SOCIAL-IN-BRIEF-21/12-885481/

According to the provincial preventive health centre, since the first H5N1 patient died in Dam Mun, Dien Bien district on November 30, 2009, no more deaths from the same disease have been reported in the province. Previously, four suspected cases tested negative for the A/H5N1 virus. Currently, 18 people contacting the deadly virus are being isolated and monitored strictly and they remain in stable conditions.

Re: Vietnam - Dien Bien province, 2 confirmed human deaths from H5N1 + other suspicious deaths due to acute respiratory illness - exposure to H5N1 positive poultry

Currently, 18 people contacting the deadly virus....
contacting. why not "contracting".
• a person who has associated with a patient with a contagious disease (and so may carry the infection)
Great.

ETA: I would think that if they are still hospitalized, and in isolation, and being monitored...that they are confirmed. If they were negative, they would not be there in that situation on December 21st.

Re: Vietnam - Dien Bien province, 2 confirmed human deaths from H5N1 + other suspicious deaths due to acute respiratory illness - exposure to H5N1 positive poultry

I take "contacting the virus" (without an "r" in it) to mean having contact with either a person or bird that was suspected to have the virus. I think they would be suspected cases if they thought they had "contracted" (with the "r") the virus. And if they really did contract H5N1, a bunch of them would be dead by now. The fact that the number has been exactly 18 for some time I think means that those are all the contacts of the dead confirmed case. They may be held in isolation for up to three weeks from their last contact with the dead man.

As the man died on November 30, I would expect them to be released from isolation shortly.
